I have copied a movie from a VHS to my pc using VHS to DVD the file is a .avi but its 4.20gb and when I convert it to DVD its bound to be much bigger than 4.20gb I know maybe I could use a double layer disc, but is there anyway it can be shrunk down. or whats best program to use as I really would like to fit this on 1 dvd. if not its going to have to be a double layer dvd then.

PLEASE give us more information, 4.20 gb avi doesn't say much.
How many minutes / DVD do you want?
What tool(s) are you using? for capturing and converting, "VHS to DVD" ? -
I did say in previous post what I used to copy from video I used Honestech VHS to DVD 2.0 and will use convertXtoDVD to convert to DVD

For quality and time purposes, it is always best to capture to the format needed for the final product. In this case mpeg 1 or mpeg2. It would save you the time of converting the video.
I expect your avi capture settings are also wrong. Load the file into the latest gSpot and post a screen shot to show us the specs.
I would start over and capture as an mpeg2 file that meets dvd spec.Google is your Friend -

so whats best program to used then to convert to dvd, as it needs to be audio_ts and video_ts
also i get this error when trying to enable codecs in options

These files are already DVD compliant.
If I was you, I'd just take them (without joining them first) and author them, as 2 parts of the same title, with TMPGEnc DVD Author. (And remember to remove the chapter point TDA inserts at the join.)
It will be slightly oversized, but I'd go ahead and author to HDD anyway, and then shrink it down in size with DVDShrink, and finally burn to disc with imgburn.

From that first Gspot screenshot, it's DVD complaint MPEG-2 video with MPEG-1 Layer2, so all you probably need to do is author it to DVD format. That should not add much to the filesize, less than a couple of hundred MBs. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author, but a freeware alternative is DVDAuthorGui.
It appears to be VBR encoded video. That may be why the filesize was misread.
The second Gspot seems to show you have a problem with your lameACM codec. The video you are working on doesn't use MP3. You can remove the codec, and maybe reinstall a newer version to see if that cures it.
From http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/134366.html:
Open System Properties by right-clicking My Computer and go to Properties. Now go to the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button. In the Device Manager, expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" entry, then double-click the Audio codecs entry. In the new window, go to the Properties tab. In the list look for "lameacm.acm". If it is there, select it and click the Remove button. Click Yes and OK all the way back out. Restart your computer and see if the problem comes back. -
when you say all i have to do is author it to DVD format I have got DVDAuthorGui. but thats just to place chapters I believe. so will it make it video_ts and audio_ts folders as I have been told to use dvdsanta will this also place chapters or is it best to use DVDAuthorGui or TMPGEnc DVD Author
-
Forget DVDSanta. I'm not sure if DVDAuthorGUI can join several source files as one title (and not how well it does that) but I know TDA does, and does it well.
