I was watching a wedding dvd someone made and on the menu screen was a movie and then below it was what appeared to be the movie's reflection in a pool of water. Does anyone know how to pull off such effect with adobe premiere. Is there a plugin or something already included that would do this?

    Thanks

  2. Hard to say without seeing the actual menu. Something like this is best suited to compositing programs like After Effects.

I was asked to do something similar using - the client wanted a reflection of a windmill in a creek in the foreground. Duplicated the windmill layer and combined it with the "creek layer" and added a ripple effect.

Flaming Pear have a photoshop plugin called Flood -> http://www.flamingpear.com/flood.html that does this for stills. Premiere may support it and be able to use it for video as well. There are also many other ways to do this in compositing programs.

I've tried the "Flood" plugin on Premiere Pro 1.5 - it's listed in the "Video Effects" but doesn't "take hold" when dropped onto a video clip or even a title. I didn't try an image.

I also tried it in Photoshop CS2 - it came up with a dialog box to make adjustments to the filter, but nothing happened to the image there either. So it may be a license / trying it for free issue.

I don't know how long it has been since it was updated either. There were some changes to the plugin SDK with later version of Premiere and Photoshop that might have caused problems.

Thanks for the chatter, I love this forum.
Guns1inger youi have helped me twice now on the same DVD. How about I come over and bring the pizza and your drink of choice so you can watch it and tell me how its done.
When you say composting program, what do you mean?
Are there any free filters that can be used with Vdub or TMGPEnc to make some type of effect that could be brought into an editing program. I found a program called Sqirlz water reflections that works great for photos but having some problems with video but am still playing with it. I'll try to attach a small clip of it later if you all don't mind.

Here is the first 10 sec or so of the menu of a friend's wedding.
I was just curious how he did that. Perhaps there is a better term for this than water reflection just curious if anyone knows how to do this easily and cheeply if possible.

A rudimentary version of this can be done very quickly with WAX2 and the Mirror Top preset. I don't know WAX well enough to get the bottom half rippling yet.

    /edit

There is a DirectX plugin called waves, which should be applied after the mirror preset. It looks workable in the preview, but the laptop I was testing it on has the worst DirectX chipset since S3 stopped making gfx cards (Intel 'Extreme') and all I get are black renders.

The posters below are right - it should be easy in Premiere (and is in Vegas). The one thing I do like about the example you posted, which would require a little finessing, is the horizon effect. Again, not difficult, but you will have to experiment. I suspect that your friend has used a plugin to do the whole effect, so asking the question is worth the effort.

  10. That should be very easy to do in premier or any NLE. It's just 2 duplicate clips with a black background with one transformed (made upside down and backwards) to look like a reflection with a ripple effect.

I'm not being facetious here, but have you asked your friend how he did it? I know they may not be within physical reach, but an explanation over the phone or by email will surely be a good place to start.

Something like: "Use [this tool] with [this filter / effect] that you can get from [this site] and do [these settings]. Have a play with it from there and see how you go..." kind of advice.

Sorry I should have been more specific about the "he" was I was referring to. I should have said the videographer. My friend whose wedding it was has just now mastered his first computer skill - successfully playing a game of mindsweeper!! Not much of a editing gensius but he had good taste in videographers.

I played around with the ripple effects and wave effects in premiere along with the turning it upside down but didn't think it looked the same. I played with it some more and got it "close enough" for my liking. I may play around with WAX next or move onto something new

    Thanks all....

    Ah... Good point, well made.

Which filters / effects did you use in Premiere to "get close"?
