What settigns should be configured to get the best out of TMPGenc? I've recently tried cutting out part of a movie in divx format but the result was no audio...only video...What caused that?

There are no perfect settings. It varies from movie to movie.

    High on the list are

    1. Get a good quality source. Xvid/Divx are not good quality sources, no matter how nice you may think your recent download is.

    2. If you must filter, use good quality filters. Avisynth would be top of the list, followed by vitrualdub. Both are faster (in avisynth's case, much faster) than tmgpenc's filters.

    3. Bitrate. Get a good bitrate calculator and use it to get the right encoding settings. All you other setting need to comply with the DVD standard - see What is DVD (top left corder of this page) for details.

For best audio results, use virtualdubmod to demux the audio (if AC3) or export as uncompressed PCM if MP3. Convert uncompressed PCM to AC3 using ffmpeggui, then add it back with the video during authoring.

Do not expect to get DVD quality from downloaded Xvid/Divx material.

Do expect the mpeg encoded version to look worse than the original. Most downloaded material has a resduced resolution, as well as a reduced bitrate. Most Divx/Xvid playback programs include some form of blending and deartifacting on the fly. When you encode, you will also resize back to DVD resolution. This will make all the flaws in the original a lot more obvious than what you see during playback.

Do expect the size to be at least 4 times that of the original to maintain quality. Realistically, you should encode based on running time, not some imagined need to fit two movies to a disc.
