problems burning to dvd

still having problems burning dvd files to disc. im using version 6 of nero and either get a Burn Error Message before it starts to burn or completes the burn saying "burn succesfully" but the disc is a coaster and wont play or read as empty disc. when its burning the light on my drive dosent go to red or stay still it just goes on and off whilst in burning process.

not sure if it is a connection, but iv no problems burning vcds onto cd or music files.

DVD writers has 2 lasers, one for cd's and another one for dvd's.
It sounds like your dvd laser is faulty.
Is it still under guarantee?? if so replace...
DVD writers are quite cheap thesedays, you can buy a new one for about £35 pounds.

Have you changed brand of discs recently ?

I had been using the same brand quite happily for many months, however my normal supplier stopped stocking them, and no-one else around here carried them. I change to an alternate, recommended brand, and found that my burner would not recognise them as blank. It would start to write, then fail as it started the lead-in saying the disc was full.

I found a more recent, third party fiirmware update that added new write strategies, including a better default for unknown discs, and have hod no problems since.

I suspect that in time I will have to replace the drive simply because there are no further firmware updates likely to be written for it, and it will eventually no longer recognise the discs correctly because of it.

im again having problems burning files to disc but now its also files onto cd. tried to burn files, using a rewritable disc, and at the end of burning it read "burn failure" when i tried to play it on a dvd player it didnt read it but showed that the files were on the disc when i opened the folder. when i tried it on another dvd player it read the files.

not sure if its a laser problem because iv never had problems burning to cd and vcd before now, only dvd files. iv checked for viruses and found none. but strangley when i unistalled nero and reinstalled it the shortcut icon for nero startsmart was missing and when click on it read "missing short cut".
