Hello I am new to this forum

I am trying to make a music video compliation of my favorite videos. I’ve read several threads, but still am left confused.

This seems to much more complicated than simply burning an audio disc with mp3s . I’m a bit overwhelmed by all the different DVD types, file format types, and different programs.

I had some basic questions that would help me get going.

    1) In trying to take a video(s) off of a DVD, how do I do this? I see a few large .bup, .ifo, and .vob files, is there a simple way to extract the videos I want, ie separate them out into individual files? Is the audio and video going to end up in separate files or in one combined file?

    2) Is there a simple all in one program that can do what I want? I’ve been looking at Ulead movie factory or sony vegas movie studio, would these be good?

    3) I keep reading about tmpgenc dvd author, dvd shrink, dvd decryptor, AnyDVD, I’m can’t get straight what each of these do differently. Do I need these separate programs or can I use an all-in-one as above…

    3) What final file format I need my videos to be in just prior to burning, is it MPG2?

    4) If I download some of the videos from the internet, what format should they be in, or does it matter?

    5) What is an encrypted dvd? Some of you folks talk about using dvdecrypter, I’m not clear on this...

Help to ANY of these questions is much appreciated, hopefully I can return the favor once I gain an understanding of this stuff.

1 - Use dvd shrink - You can copy the whole disc or just one part of it. (You may need to use dvd fab decrytper to copy the whole disc to the harddrive first if dvd shrink can't read it - newer discs have protection it can't bypass).

2 - I tend to stay away from "all in one" packages. I like to tweak my stuff at different stages to my personal tastes.

3 - Tmpgenc Dvd Author is a program that "authors" a dvd. That is it takes a dvd compliant mpeg 2 file and creates the structure necesseary to burn to a dvd and be playable on a settop player (you can use it and similar programs to make menus as well).

Dvd shrink and dvd decrypter are "ripping" programs. They crack the encryption on commercial dvds so you can copy the files to your computer (dvds you own and intend to use for your own "personal" uses - no sharing)

3 - part 2 - The final format before authoring a dvd must be mpeg 2. It can be avi or wmv or whatever but before you make the dvd it needs to be in mpeg 2 format. An alternative is to get a divx compatible dvd player. Then you can burn the data file without conversion. However only the newest "ultra" divx certified players can do divx 6 with menus/chapters - older versions dont support it - you'd have to convert to mpeg 2 and author it as normal dvd if you want the menus.

4 - Again your final destination is mpeg 2 to author a dvd. Or get a divx dvd player as mentioned earlier

5 - an encrypted dvd is a commercial dvd you buy at a store. Dvd shrink, dvd fab decrytper all get around the protection so you can put it on your computer (already explained above).
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?
