I was just wondering if somebody could help me out with explaining the codecs that this dvd player is capable of playing. I've been ending up with a lot of coasters by burning discs that the dvp642 is unable to play. I know how to use virtualdubmod to convert videos to divx that I know the player is capable of playing. However, it is time consuming to convert all video before burning. Basically, I am asking if there is a way that I can use gspot or some other software to find out if the dvp642 will play the files before I burn them. Thanks for any and all help.

I have one with the 0530 (I think) firmware, and it plays all xvid and divx. Still, though, the 642 is a bit quirky.

In GSpot, look for the QPEL setting in the top-right ("VIDEO") field; if your encode used quarter pixel estimation, it might have trouble renderig correctly on the 642 (again, you can get around this with the SYSTEM button trick - hit the SYSTEM button twice while video is playing and it should appear ok).

thanks for the very quick and useful help. I also meant to ask if the 642 is capable of playing video that uses mp3 vbr as its audio source.

The SYSTEM button twice trick is amazing. I never knew that was possible. Thank you very much.

You may or may not have problems with VBR audio. It tends to be problematic for me, but others on these forums say they've had less or no problems with it. If you want to be sure, you can always test-burn your videos on an RW disc, and see how it plays on the 642, or re-encode the videos with CBR audio, instead.
