  1. hi all. i have a bunch of DiVX movies that are 14.97 (i think the .97 is right) and i want to convert to VCD. i tried a couple different bitrates and of course they are blocky. is this just going to be a case of "crap in crap out"... or is there a way to make them look half ways decent? somehow i doubt it but i would like to hear from you?

    thanks.

  2. Did you follow the guide at http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm?

Yes Divx is slow frame rate so it will not be the quality of DVD.

DivX is not "slow frame rate".

DivX is a way of encoding and decoding video. Properties such as frame rate/bitrate/resolutions etc.. are entirely configurable within the DivX codec.

An NTSC standard movie should have a frame rate of 29.97. If your DivX movies REALLY are 14fps then the movie will look jumpy (but not necessarily blocky) and there will be all sorts of sync problems with the audio.

I suspect that your DivX movies do actually have the correct fps (29.97) and that you have just read off the wrong piece of information.

As z68h said, VCDs encoded from a DivX source are never going to be the greatest quality due to DivX being a lossy format (especially at low bitrates). You should however be able to obtain satisfactory VCD quality if you play around with some settings in TMPGENC. I seem to remember that there was a thread in this forum which discussed how to best set up TMGENC to encode from DivX. If you can dig it out then it might be useful.
