  1. On original discs with English and non-English audio, subtitles seem to pop up to translate the non-English audio without me having to do anything (eg. when the Ukrainians are speaking in Everything is Illumintated).

But if I back it up as movie-only with MTR and DVD2oneX, and include subtitles, I have to manually turn the subtitles on for the foreign language bits, and then off again.

Is there a way to fix this problem?

    Cheers,
    B

I don't have a real answer for ya, just wanted to say that I've noticed this problem too. In these rare cases I usually end up ripping on my PC.

Could be a specific track/camera angle issue...
try backing up a complete disc copy,
or try via Title set, rather than Main feature.

You could also wach the original in your mac
with DVD Player and the info bar up,
and watch to see if it switches titles at
    the point you mention....

Somewhere in the IFO file there's a setting for whether or not a subtitle stream is on or off by default, and I'm guessing that when DTOX does a "movie only" compression (which involves creating a new IFO file) it just sets them all to "off" by default, since that's the more common. (Sorry for the lack of detail. I don't have any movie files on this computer to look at.)

Try making a disk image coming out of DTOX, then examine the IFO file with myDVDedit. Experiment with the subtitle settings and check the result with the Mac DVD Player app ("Open VIDEO_TS folder") I'm guessing you'l be able to recreate the subtitle behavior on the original.

Even easier: Look at the IFO file on the original disk and duplicate those settings in the disk image copy.
