    Hi everyone,

    Can anyone recommend me a DVD player that support the following features:

    * It can play DivX
    * It can play XviD
    * Have HDMI port
    * Have USB port
    * Support subtitles [SRT, SUB, IDX] (including Arabic subtitles)

    I don't really care about the cost as long as it serve what i need, and after reading few threads in here, i was about to order one, but i've read that it may not support the foreign subtitles, including the Arabic ones, so i proffered to ask first.

    Thanks in advance.

    Subtitles (including, but not limited to Arabic) are bitmap streams embedded into the program by whoever authored the DVD you will play. If there are Arabic subtitles recorded on the DVD, you will be able to select them and see them as it plays. If there are none, NO DVD player in the world will as if by magic bring them about. It has very little to do with the DVD player, and everything to do with the DVD. Try the Panasonic S52.
    For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

  3. He's talking about text based subtitles for Divx/Xvid files. This is all about the DVD player's abilities and nothing to do with movie DVDs.

    Yes true, i am talking about the DVD player's abilities in viewing the foreign subtitles, not about the actual DVD or it's included subtitles.

    We get posts here all the time about people complaining about how their DVD players can't display Arabic subtitles in Divx. Nobody has ever posted about a player that can do this. If you buy a player in Europe, it probably won't support this as they usually only support Divx subtitles in Latin and Cyrillic character sets.

  7. Philips DVP5982 will support IDX/SUB subtitle which based on bitmaps.
    most of Toshiba product like what I have is SD6000 supports unicode text(.srt, .smi....), but not idx/sub.

    I have not yet found a player can supports both unicode and idx.subs.

    So, if you buy philips, convert your Arabic .srt to idx/sub.
    if you buy toshiba, use notepad to open your subtitle file, and save as unicode.

    IF a set-top DVD player is able to display all printable characters
    contained in the font Arial Unicode MS, THEN it has the right to say
    it does support Unicode~text.

    The old Philips DVP-642 claimed to support IDX/SUB but my experience was that in reality it did not. I was never able to get it to work. If you buy a Philips player and convert your Arabic subtitles to IDX/SUB, I can't guarantee that they will work.

    I'm also not aware of any DVD player that supports Unicode in subtitles.

  10. Hi, Jman:

    I own both Philips DVP5982 and Toshiba SD6000, I proved 5982 can play idx/subs, and SD6000 can display unicode srt subtitle. I have old DVP642 as well but it just broke down recently. DVP642 won't play idx/sub at all.

    It would seem that either of these players could meet the original posters needs, but converting text based subs to IDX/SUB might be very time consuming. I would recommend the Toshiba instead.

    Have you tested unicode srt subtitles with a character set OTHER than Latin? If not, we don't really know that it truly supports unicode srt subtitles.

    Midzuki's comment (Mar 11, 2008) on Unicode (Arial Unicode MS) text support makes sense.

    newnews's comment (Mar 11, 2008) - Philips DVP5982 will support IDX/SUB subtitle which based on bitmaps may not be accurate.
    I have tried .smi (unicode file) on DVP5982 with Korean text (however, all control tags are in English). Subtitle is displaying at the right screen (or right time), however, the character set is not displayed correctly.

    My educated guess is that Philips DVP5982/37 does not fully support Arial Unicode MS. I am trying to contact Philips on this subject without success (the customer support representative person is only doing their database search for a hit, but obviously they wouldn't find the match for this).

    I hope we can voice together to have Philips support all language font that is supported with Arial Unicode MS.

    Unicode file is still a text file, DVP5982 does not support unicode. You need convert to idx/sub by using txt2vobsub program. I did conversion for my 20 movies, plays fine. Anyway, Toshiba sucks, the manual says clearly that it supports unicode but I cannot get it work. Support line is useless at all, they think I have a defective player.
