    My Set up:
    PC Hardware – Athlon 2000+: Ricoh MP5125A DVD+RW/+R
    Software – Windows Media Player 10

    When I try to play a commercial DVD with the above I receive the following message: “Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information.”
    I have tried doing as instructed, and also been through the Trouble shooting wizard with no joy. Any ideas?

    I also have Nero 6 installed but that refuses to play my DVD until I spend another $25 on their Video Plugin

    do you have mpeg2/dvd codec installed? wmp requires it for dvd playback.

    or just play with the free media player classic or videolan or kmplayer.

    Most DVD drives ship with an OEM version of either WinDVD or PowerDVD. Find your CD and install whichever of these you have. This is allow WMP to playback DVDs, and also give you a much better player to use than WMP.

    Or ebay

    1: Nero 6 , make sure it includes dvd and ac3 plugins ... or
    2: Powerdvd just for dvd playback.

    ============

    Check your video adapter and update the driver's for it ... that error was common a while back ... and nothing in the help file will help fix that ...

    I used xpantispy to remove msn messenger from my old pc , which fixed the asus3800tnt_vivo issue (freedvdcodec , ac3_filter's installed) ... of course it may not work for your pc setup ... you will have to try for yourself and see if it make's the difference ... if not ... you can reinstall msn messenger later .

    Thanks, I've use the freedvdcodec mentioned by Bjs, and that seems to have sorted the issue.
