    Hello All,
I searched for a good 1/2 hour and didn't find a post about incomplete chapters burned, so here goes.

I use DVD Shrink 3.2 to encode the DVD files to hard drive, then I use Nero to burn DVD files to a DVD -R. I burn at 4x now (previous problem).

I get a good message from Nero when the burn process is done.

When I check the newly created DVD on my set top DVD player I >| through the chapters, and I am getting an incomplete movie. I tried two last night, on one I only got chapters 1-8 and the other I only got 1-12. The quality is fine. When it reaches the end of chapter 8 and 12 respectivly the frames freezes and the player locks up for 2-3 minutes then it shuts down the DVD and goes to the 'Pioneer DVD Player' splash screen.

This does not happen all the time, it either works or it does not.

All I've ever used is DVD Shrink and Nero (how to guide from this site). I've backed up over 40 DVD's in the last year successfully. I did switch from letting DVD Shrink encode AND burn using Nero to just having Shrink encode, then I manually burn the VOB files (with Nero) so I can control the burn speed.

    Thanks for any help.

Use a dedicated ripper to get the DVD onto your hard drive. Use either DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter. Do NOT use DVDShrink to rip the DVD!

Now once you get the DVD onto your hard drive you can go ahead and use DVDShrink to compress the size down to that of a single layer recordable DVD disc.

Have DVDShrink make an ISO IMAGE file.

Use ImgBurn to burn the ISO IMAGE file.

Please note that while DVD Decrypter is the best ripper ever it is now out-of-date as it is no longer being updated. Therefore some newer DVD discs (mostly just SONY titles) need to be ripped using DVDFab Decrypter (which is still being updated when needed to deal with problem DVD discs like those made by SONY).

Remember though that if the original DVD is a single layer DVD that you do NOT have to use DVDShrink at all. Instead just rip in ISO mode using DVD Decrypter then burn the ISO IMAGE file with ImgBurn. Unfortunately DVDFab Decrypter will not rip to an ISO IMAGE file so if you must rip a single layer DVD original with DVDFab Decrypter you will have to use ImgTools (make sure you use the classic version of ImgToos) to make an ISO IMAGE file from the files that DVDFab Decrypter puts on your hard drive. Again at that point you burn with ImgBurn.

    John,
    Worked like a charm !!

Please confirm and comment on the following:

    DVDDecrypter is the 'ripper'.
DVD Shrink is the 'compressor' (if needed).
    IMGBurn is the disc writer.

I think I understand the above applications and the roles they play in the process.
Might sound dumb but, How do you tell if the source disc is single or dual layer? Do you just check the size of the output directory from DVDDecrypter?

    Thanks a ton!!,

    Well, I have a question.

I have Shrink, Decryptor, etc and have used them all at one time or another.

My normal process is to just use DVDShrink to do everything. Read it in, select what to delete/compress/etc, have it backup, have it automatically burn through Nero. It's all nice and easy in one big step.

Are there benefits to breaking it up and using Decryptor first and then using Shrink and then using the burn program? I would only use Decryptor if Shrink had a problem with something and couldn't read it in...

Also back to the OP, I use Shrink last night and had it save the files to the hard drive. How to I then use Nero to burn them to the DVD properly? I always have SHrink do it automatically so I'm not sure how to do that manually...

    Thanks.

The benefit is that you would know that the movie has been ripped. Shrink is a good program, but it is no longer updated and sometimes hiccups. It is better to use a different program to rip, then use shrink to shrink.

Open Nero, select video dvd - select the files and burn away.

    That's it!

Although as I was trying to say ... sometimes (with new DVD movies) DVD Decrypter will not work ... in which case use DVDFab Decrypter.

Also ImgBurn can only burn from an ISO IMAGE file (for now as that may change soon) so if you have a FOLDER full of ripped DVD files and need to make an ISO IMAGE file you can use ImgTool classic version for that.

Although the word is ... next version of ImgBurn will be able to burn DVD ready video files without first needing to make an ISO IMAGE file.

DVD Decrypter tells you if the DVD is 1 layer or 2 layers.
