I'm looking for a new PRIMA DVD Player model DV-935 with Upconverting via HDMI output. Some questions about this model :

    - Does this model is regionfree « out of the box » and if not, is it possible to hack with the remote or with a CD?

    - Is it possible to bypass the HDMI ( I mean via he components like some models) for upconverting to 720p/1080i? I got only 1 HMDI output on my TV and I am planning to have a HD cable box.

I would like some comments about the quality of the 720p signal and the chipset. I am unable to find any detailled specifications.

BTW, BestBuy is currenly selling this new model at 79 CAN$ so this is the cheapest DVD player with upgrading functionnalities.

    Thanks

What HDTV did you buy (model number) and why do you want to upconvert? Upconversion should be built into your HDTV.

Cheap HDTV's probably have poor upconversion but so do cheap DVD players.

I got a Hitachi 42 " LCD 42V515 and this model is able to display 720p/1080i.

I don't know if any signal in 480 p from a standard DVD player could be upscaled in 720 p with my TV. Maybe I 'm wrong but does the source must be only a HDMI signal in 720 p in order to get a HD pictures?

The reason why I want a cheap player is because I'm already have 3 DVD players and this player is for a temporary use . I'm waiting who will be the winner in the HDdvd/Blueray war before buying one .

You have one of the few LCD HDTV sets with exactly 1280x720p resolution so it is a candidate for external DVD player upscaling but it also contains internal upscaling from 480p so you would need to compare the two ways to get to the same result. Unless the DVD player is very high end, my expectation is the TV's scaler will produce equal or better results. I'd use the HDMI connector with the cable tuner which is true high definition.

You can get 480p/720p/1080i over the YPbPr component inputs. This will work fine for the DVD player so long as everything is set for 480p at both ends.

The scaler in your HDTV is called "VirtualHD". It also includes inverse telecine and scaling for 480i and 1080i inputs to 720p (native resolution). You have two HD capable YPbPr inputs.
