  1. I've noticed, on every player I've tried so far that is, that DVD's seem to "reset" the player after a short period if you try to watch the entire movie/chapter zoomed!

    Specific case:
The World Is Not Enough - 2.35:1 (ultra wide ratio)
    ROWA - DVD-3610
JVC - XV-S62SL (I think this is the number)

Chapter 3(I think) - the boat chase
    - zoom one or more levels before shots are fired and the boat turns to jet away
    - soon after the boat moves in the water, zoom is always reset to "none", no matter the duration of time before this scene

NOT ONLY THAT, but on the ROWA, once it resets the zoom back to normal, several features on the player are DISABLED from that point until the end of the movie: forward, reverse, pause, and zoom. This is completely repeatable! If I skip ahead or back chapters, it enables the options again for a little while until this DISABLER POINT, which seems to be in each chapter at various points, strikes!

COUNTLESS other examples exist in this movie! So far, only one other movie was tested: my cousin tried Pearl Harbor in his player (Cerwin Vega I think), and it does something quite similar!

Is this some sick joke of the MPIA?

What players allow you to OVERRIDE this anti-zoom feature?

Seriously! This is BS! I've put off buying a home DVD player for this long, and THIS is what I've been missing? What a load...

Please, ANYONE who can, give me some reasons/feedback! I've posted many times in the past, but I don't think I ever have in this particular forum group so I may be unfamiliar to most of you. I'm a vidcap nut, but this is my first foray into the home player market.

The ROWA's reaction to the DVD, is that common? At least the JVC let me re-zoom after it reset it...

    HELP!

  2. Well, I was really hoping for a response before this afternoon here. I had been considering returning the player if I couldn't get a workaround or an explanation of "well, all players do that" (which I was hoping for). Something just doesn't seem right with what the Rowa's doing though.

The features of that player are exemplary: 4 zoom levels, VCD/MP3 full compatibility that I was able to test... just the odd "crippler marks" in viewing the video (that disable most of the player's features) annoy the heck out of me!

I would like to hear any responses never-the-less. I'd like to know just what to look for in player that lets it override these "reset" markers in the video stream from the DVD.

PS: do most DVD players with MP3 playback limit the number of tracks to 150?

  3. Hasn't ANYONE else tried to watch a movie zoomed? This apparently is a very common problem as all three DVD players in my known test pool do this "reset", and seeing as one is a fairly high end player, I'd bet the majority of players have this issue.

I don't like sacrificing viewing material as much as the next guy, but when you're viewing an ultra wide (2.35:1) movie on a 4:3 TV and LOSING about have vertical res due to the TV (only about HALF the screen is utilized), I'd rather zoom up one notch, lose a little on the edges, and live with a couple inch border top and bottom instead of a 5 inch top and bottom!

Anyone know of a good FAQ that discusses standalone DVD player issues such as this?

  4. Ok, I give up. Doesn't look like anyone around here must watch DVD movies on a standalone player.

Hrmph. Anyone know of a good forum that discusses standalone DVD player issues such as this?

Wow. Glad the other forums here aren't as useless!
