That's probably the driver for your sound card, but I think you'd be best to delete the device altogether and then let windows redetect it on reboot.

If running Windows 2000 or XP, go to Start > run, type in devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

Expand sound, video and game controllers and one of the items listed should be an Audio Controller. Select it by clicking once, and then press the delete key. Reboot, and windows should autodetect your sound card again.

Alternatively simply reinstalling the driver may fix the problem.
    If in doubt, Google it.

You can do that simple way ... but for real problem fix :

Before removing the device ... you must enter bios ... and check it has not been disabled ... it dose happen .

Remove any associated application's that had been installed by the ac97 installation package first .
Reboot pc ... enter safe mode ... head to cotrol panel , system , hardware , device manager ...
Remove sound device's for ac97 chipset (removing all sound device's will also work) ... if you have some listed as for modem device ... leave those ... reboot pc as normal .

When pc start's throwing up "found new hardware" ... tell it to bugger off ... all of them .
Install updated package for current audio device ... reboot when done .

Allow pc to run "found new hardware" ... you may need to point these to windows/system32 folder .

    Reboot and it's set .
