    Hi,

I recently bought a Samsung 940MW monitor, which has a DVI/HDCP input, a Samsung HD860 “upconversion” DVD player, which has a HDMI output, and an HDMI-to-DVI cable. So far, I’ve been unable to view the DVD player’s HDMI output on the monitor. I haven’t been able to find any answers in the manuals, via Google, or on this site, so I’m hoping someone here can help me out.

Some further information that may be helpful:

If I go to the setup menu on the DVD player (while using the composite output), I can turn on the HDMI output, at which point the monitor goes black (presumably because the DVD player has disabled the composite output). When I select the DVI input on the monitor, though, the screen is still black. I can’t even bring up the menu (which I _can_ do when there’s no signal coming in through the composite input). Also, the green light on the monitor is steady when the DVD player is (supposedly) generating HDMI output, and it blinks when the DVD player isn’t (or shouldn’t be) sending anything over HDMI. (In other words, I think the light is behaving as it should, but I can’t be sure because I don’t know whether the DVD player is really generating HDMI output.)

So, if anyone can help me with this, I’d appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  2. I don't have a true answer, buts its always one of the following:

    1. ) Bad Unit
    2. ) Bad Cable
    3. ) Incompatibility between two units

Have you tried HDMI/DVI to a TV that has these inputs? If that works, then there is something with the monitor. Maybe it can't do the handshake from the DVD to the monitor.

On a differernt note, how do you like your player?

Here is what it looks like to me.

The Samsung 940MW is basically a 1440 x 900 native WSXGA (aka WXGA) computer monitor intended to be connected to a computer display adapter set to WXGA. I see nothing in the spec that the DVI-D connector accepts 480p, 720p or 1080i or supports HDCP encryption.

The monitor does accept analog component so the YPbPr inputs should work fine with 480p (720x480 progressive scaled to 1440x900 in the monitor) and may work with 720p (DVD player upscaled 1280x720, scaled again to 1440x900 in the monitor).

I'd avoid 1080i with that monitor which would require deinterlacing in the monitor. A monitor that small and cheap would most likely toss a field and scale from 1920x540 to 1440x900 at 29.97 frames per second.

For a standard DVD player, I'd expect best results in 480p mode, letting the monitor upscale. This will maintain optimal 59.94 frame per second frame rate.
