  1. Quick question, basically a sanity check before I buy.

The difference between the Fusion 5 gold card and the Fusion 5 Lite would be that the Lite version doesnt come with a remote control and has no analog capture input. Correct?

There is no difference in both cards ability to capture/decode OTA or QAM. Yes/No?

The Fusion5 Gold (& Lite) are now replaced by the Fusion HDTV5 RT Gold (& Lite).
(I just bought one, the 5 RT Gold. Just received it, haven't installed just yet.)

They now have the latest electronics for improving display quality for the OTA HDTV and QAM signals. Check out the features on their website. Now supports Windows 64-bit XP.

  3. Ok, thanks. But back to my original question.

The basic difference is that the Lite doesnt come with a Remote Control and does not capture analog video (RCA/Composite). Yes/No?

Basically, I want to buy a pair of these. Stick em in two machines and capture NFL games to send to family members in Iraq. All I need these to do is capture the transport stream to .ts .tr or .mpg, which i'll convert to DVD using 3rd party software that I bought this year. But its also important that I be able to capture the 5.1 digital audio and keep that intact when converting to DVD.

I plan to stick one card in a 1.8ghz AMD (32 bit) and the other in an 2ghz AMD (64 bit dual core) system. Having 64 bit functionality for WinXP 64 isnt that important to me.

    The Gold version includes:
FusionHDTV5 RT Gold Board / Fusion MCE Remote Control / Installation CD / Converter Cable for External Input / Connection Cable for Internal Sound / Users Manual / Ulead VideoStudio 8se DVD

    The Lite version includes:
FusionHDTV5 RT Lite Board / Installation CD / Users Manual / Connection Cable for Internal Sound Card

Based on the photos of the two boards, it looks like you have two connections, the top is certainly an RF connection - can't tell what the bottom is.

  5. Ok, so its what I thought it was. The lite version has no remote control (which I dont need) and does not have the ability to capture analog video (which I also dont need). It also doesnt come with a few pieces of software.

    (Fusion Converter)
You favorite sections from a recorded HD broadcasting program can be edited and then converted to XVid, DivX, DVD formats with the Fusion Converter.
Do I really need this software? Can I get away with using either hdtv2mpeg2 or VideoReDo? It saves the transport files to .ts right? I dont plan on using this card as a PVR.

You probably should look at the comparison chart (above link).
It looks to me that the Lite version does not capture video as the Gold version does.

Also, according to the manual, where you determine and store the video capture file settings, it appears you select either .TP or .MPEG file types.

How this affects your choice of editing software (for .TP) I am unsure.
I do know that VideoRedo will edit the mpeg files (bought it myself).
There is a free software called mpeg2cut2 that will handle large mpeg's including hdtv resolutions.

I ge the impression that their included software is an all-in-1 solution that easily takes the place of any other software you may already have. (Edit and convert to other formats, since you can store direct to mpeg - there's your standard. It says DVD, which means you can convert to DVD resolutions at MPEG-2 from the hdtv resolutions - which is what I am interested in as well.)

I have the lite version, and it can be set to capture at any appropriate time. The box also includes a cable that will allow the software to wake up the computer if your motherboard supports that feature. The freeware program HDTV2DVD does a fine job of transcoding the .tp file and creating a set of video_ts and audio_ts folders for burning. I have recorded a HD feed of the Stanley Cup semi-finals and burned to one disk. Though 3 hours is a little much for a DVD, the quality was not bad and remained at 16:9. You should have no problem recording NFL games on this card.

  10. Just a FYI,

Careful when buying from datoptic.com. They totally screwed up the order.

Misspelled my first name, email address, street address and to top it off, sent me the wrong item (the USB version and not the PCI card). Now I don’t care if people swear, but you would think a customer service rep (guy had an east indian accent) would reframe from saying "Oh shit, I’m sorry". About 5 minutes into the call I was going "So do you want my name or order number or something?", I basically had to lead the guy on how to resolve the series of mistakes.

As someone who has worked customer service jobs, it was kinda embarrassing.

I'll post a comparison of MyHD MDP-100 vs Fusion 5 Gold RT in a few weeks if anyone cares, that is assuming they send me the right item, or even deliver it to the correct address.
