I am in the market for a new DVD player. I own 6 DVD players, and I must say while it wasn't perfect (it was damn close) the best all around player in my house has been the 642. Two features I need beyond a shadow a doubt are (1) the ability to play DivX/XviD's, I would hope that some of the newer versions of the codec might be playable on the newer sets but if not it's not the end of the world. Then (2) it must be able to be region freeable, I have been looking around and mostly it seems that I can get one or the other these days, but I cannot compromise. I can no longer keep switching players to play the discs I have. One other not so important thing was that the Phillips played just about every type of disc out there minus DVD-RW. It would be great to have a player that, how did the box sell it "You have it, we play it!"?

Long story short I am in need of a player that can do it all. I am hoping that there are a few newer players that the community might know of that could fit this bill if not I understand that I might have to work magic, find another 642 and try and revert to an older version of the firmware...

Thank you all for your time.

    Modified XBOX.

You can find used XBOX's pretty cheap now, and you don't even need to open them up to softmod them. They play just about everything, more than any standalone could dream of.

I'm very happy with my LG LDA-531. Here is a link for it:

    http://www.onlybestrated.com/lda531-1080i-upconverting-divx-xvid-player-with-hdmi-p-47.html

Advantages: Region Free, PAL-to-NTSC converter, HDMI / component / composite / S-Video, upconverts to 720p and 1080i, plays DIVX / XVID / AVI / MPEG / WMA / VCD / SVCD / JPEG / DVD Audio / MP3 (CDR and DVDR), and more. It's played virtually everything I've thrown at it, with the exception of HD DIVX files. It also has a cool feature where you can program it to jump directly to the video, bypassing the various studio logos, commercials, and menus. There have been some complaints about this unit not upconverting via component, but that's been fixed with a firmware upgrade. There's also some talk about lip sync issues via HDMI, but I haven't had a problem. The one real disadvantage is a strange omission: there's no 'time remaining' counter! It's odd that it doesn't have this capability, and I really miss having it. All in all, an excellent player.

Here's another player worth looking at:

    Good luck!

  4. Get the new Phillips 5960 so far it has played everything I've tossed at it in the AVI & MPG formats. Can be set region free. I've played NTSC and PAL in it with output to NTSC.

It has even played avis that my new Toshiba choked on sad to say. Ultra Divx Certified.

  5. I like the Oppo it does everything that the LG owner mentioned above. It's video quality has been raved about over at avsforum.com. It did Divx much better in quality then the 642 I owned. It's also built quite well. I have the 971H which has a better upconverter (the Faroudja). The 970 is mainly for those that want to use the TV's upconverter or another outside scaler.

@handyguy man you are my hero I wish I could get you to give a good honest response like that for everyone's post.

Actually the reason I asked (while I still did the research myself) was because I wanted to see if anyone could put there 2 cents in; which I appreciated.

If I get my bonus at the end of the month I will definitely get the OPPO DV-970HD I haven't seen one bad comment anywhere. Once again thank you (almost) all for the responses.
