I'm thinking about buying a D805 but I don't know what motherboard to buy. I've looked at Anand-Tech and Tom's Hardware but find nothing about which motherboard.
Does the dual core need a special chipset? It seems old chipsets will run P4D cpu but will they recognize the dual coe.

  2. get a mobo with Intel chip, Asus, Abit, Gigabyte, even Msi is good.
I have an Asus with Via and is crap, Intel is better for Intel cpu.

    look at motherboards.org

  3. Yes you certain specific chipsets for dual core processors. Stick with teh Intel chipset for a intel processor. Or a Nvidia chipset for dual core AMD processors. I recnetly built a AMD dual for myself and I have to say that the chip runs much cooler than the Intel.

I've used several ASUS Mobos with the dual core Intels. Asus makes a nice one that has Several levels of SATA raid, as well enough IDE ports, External SATA and Firewire two 16x PCI Express and so on. Not cheap though. They also make a less expensive board with Intel chipset and less features that works good to.

My only reason for preferring the More expensive one is for people that like lots of storage attached inernally, As I recall it it can handle 10 or more SATA/IDE devices. Check the ASUS website for details and model number as I don't have the info to hand.

I've included a few I'm looking at for that same processor or possibly an 820:

Abit IL8 - low end, but supports SATA-II
    http://www.chiefvalue.com/product/productdetails.aspx?item=13-127-231

    Abit AW8 - Medium, supports RAID 0/1/0+1/5 4 SATA-II channels, $20 extra for firewire
    http://www.chiefvalue.com/product/productdetails.aspx?item=13-127-213

    ABit AL8 - Supports RAID 0/1/0+1/5 6 SATA-II Channels
    http://www.chiefvalue.com/product/productdetails.aspx?item=13-127-208

These are, by no means, the only choices, but hopefuly they'll help.

  5. Read about the P5WD2-E Premium here

    http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/motherboards/1616_9.html
And the Asus P5WD2 Premium Here
    http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2412&p=2

    and the P5LD2-VM here

    http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=194&model=536&modelmenu=1

I've used two of these models and they were solid. Never had good luck with Abit, they always seemed to be shorter lived than other brands.

Asus has always had a reputation for being extremely finicky with memory. If the new crop is more flexible, then that's not so bad, even though the one is rather pricey and has less features. RAID 0+1 is important and I don't want to shell out lots of extra dough for a good and proper RAID card.

If you are planning for a dual core processor, you should go for intel chipset motherboards. Intel 945, 955, 975 chipsets will do. I am Using D830 with gigabyte motherboard 8I945G motherboard. Working fine, without any problem.
