    When I'm converting a clip to a muxed mpg, i never get audio if i choose ac3. I get sound if i use MP2 however. Is there something i'm overlooking?, please pardon the newbie.

    Which player? Do you not hear audio in QuickTime Player, VLC and mplayer? Unlike the other two, it is a known limitation of QuickTime Player to not decode AC3 audio in MPEG streams, even if you have the AC3 component installed.
    If other players don't give audio either, you may want to look at the process logs.

    With Mp2 selected i get a single complete mpg with sound. With ac3 selected i get 2 files, an mpv-with no sound and an ac3 file with zero k as its file size

    Have you checked the "Decode with QuickTime" checkbox? Try not doing this. Or it may be that you don't have an AC3 codec(?)
