Got a computer two weeks ago. Its used, it was a family members. Its roughly 5yrs old. Its an HP Pavillian - Windows XP. I use InterVideo WinDVD 3.1 DXVA, it came with the computer, and no CD for reinstalling it.

Last week I played a normal DVD and was capturing photos from it. And a few days ago, I watched parts of another DVD.

Yesterday I popped in a DVD with DVDROM features that I was trying to watch, a screen popped up and asked me to install InterActual...I think its called. So I installed it. The DVD menu came up, and I went through the menu to get to the Script that I wanted to view. Hit play, and I got an error saying that my DVD couldn't play because the screen res & color may be effecting the playing of it, or it was my decoder. Now...from what I've read, a decoder is just the software that comes with your computer, or you buy that makes your DVD player work. Which in my case would be InterVideo WinDVD.

Anyhow, I then tried to play the movie in Windows Media Player, and first it told me it couldn't play, and later told me it couldn't play because of the copyright protection...however, its a legit DVD.

I tried to then play it using WinDVD, and nothing happened, it wouldn't play at all.

So, I talked to my friend online who is good with video codecs and video software. He said he wasn't sure but he thought InterActual did it. So he told me to uninstall it. So I did.

After that I tried to play it in Windows Media again - nothing. Then WinDVD, and all of the sudden I could hear it playing but no video. So I went and downloaded DivX codec, as well as the Nimo Bundle 8. Rebooted.

This time everytime I tried to play it in InterVideo WinDVD it would start, and crash, but as it was crashing I could see a little bit of video on the screen, but it would freeze up before going any farther.

So late last night, I decided to install the WinDVD 7 Trial, to see if maybe my software needed an upgrade. I'm on dial up, so it took about 4hrs. I just installed it, rebooted and tried to run a DVD (two different ones) and I get audio, but no video. I decided to try something out, so I put in a normal CD, it can read it, I put in a VCD, it can read it.

So, I can get sound but no video...I'm really at a loss for what to do. Especially considering it was working fine a few days before I installed InterActual

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

I should also probably mention that I found a program for Windows Media Player to check and see if I have decoders that work with Windows Media Player 10, and I ran the program. It lists the following:

    Ligos MPEG Video Decoder
    InterVideo Video Decoder
    Fraunhofer Video Decoder

  3. What a mess...
    1. Uninstall WinDVD 7
    2. Uninstall Nimo bundle (do not ever install such packs! They are evil!)
    3. Uninstall DivX codec
    4. Get Codec Sniper and uninstall every codec used for mpeg2 playback
    5. Reinstall WinDVD 7 Trial
    Try to play.

You might want to use the windows xp restore feature to roll back the system to before the problem accured ... only problem is any program installed since last system restore point will have all there executable's nulled , so they wont work and need to be uninstalled , and reinstalled once more .

As for dvd playback ... search for koolplaya (just place the thing on desktop) , install ac3filter's ... as for the video side of thing's ... the freedvdcodec , if you can find it works well ... so dose those two listed at dvdauthorgui's website .

If windvd or other dvd playback software is installed , koolplaya will work with the default decoder's of these .

Reading media is different to playback ...

    -------------------------------

There are a couple of tool's here on site for dealing with codec's installed , allowing you disable or swap them ... a good way to locate the trouble ... though there is not much information about how to use them correctly ... if you disable one , and something nolonger is working as before ... re-enable that one ... and try again .

There are time's when the pc reboot is required ... even under xp ... so as to release these function's and to use the updated change's .

They do say what the codec's refer to , which is a little help .

I recommend gspot as a helper app ... though I have yet to test if gspot reports the video decoder ... as the disabled or enabled .

Ie , default codec is disabled ... but gspot now report's other suitable for the video playback ...

Just an idea that would simplify these many issue's which keep appearing in many forum's ...

Ok, I'm gonna test these few things out, and see if I get anywhere with this

Well, I don't know how to tell which ones are MPEG2. But I followed all of your directions up until that point.

Ok I reinstalled WinDVD 7 Trial & rebooted

Tried using the player. Still no video, but I get audio. Except now the audio is really choppy.

Then I noticed that this trial version came with InterActual player as well...the player that I think originally messed up the whole thing.

So I try playing in the InterActual player. I get this error:
A CSS error occurred while trying to play the DVD. Please try restarting your computer to fix the problem. If you continue to receive this error, please try reinstalling your DVD navigator, or contact your DVD navigator manufacturer.

On InterActual, I went to SystemInfo and I get the following

somewhere up there it says "Direct X Version: 5.03.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)" I installed a game the other day that required DirectX 9 and was told to go to Start, Run, dxdiag and check my version info as well as video card info, etc. There it tells me I have DirectX 9 so I don't know that that would have anything to do with it.

As for system restore, I believe its turned off on this computer. Honestly, I don't believe it ever worked properly on this computer thus the reason it was turned off. Before I got the computer however, I did do a reformat...but not the real kind, it restores stuff to the factory settings, but tends to save your files, and just uninstalls your programs. I believe you do that by hitting F12 or something like that when starting up windows. . . if that is my only option I'll do it, but I'd hate to do it to find out that didn't work.

Ok...the player is even registering if the movie is widescreen or not because I switched DVDs and put in a widescreen and the player got bigger. So got choppy audio, no video still

Then both players reporting your system cannot decrypt the DVD on-the-fly.
