    this is a strange problem.

i have Noticed that with mencoder, i cant get my video bitrate over 650kbps, i set it to vbitrate=710 and at 320x240, but the result is only about 500, now if i use the same settings but at 640x480, all is well, can someone tell me why?

    thanks in advanced

  2. Hi-

    ...can someone tell me why?

Because at 320x240 you've "saturated" the codec. You've given it all the bits it can use. You've encoded it at it's best quality for that resolution and for those settings. 640x480, on the other hand, has 4 times the pixels and can use a much higher bitrate before the same thing happens.

i'm pretty sure the max for 320x240 is over 700kbps?

could it be something to do with the scaling algoritm? i think the mencoder default is fast bilinear?

i'm going to try a bicubic and lanczos tomorrow to see if its any different...
