you'll need to fill in more details. You'll need to let us know what the actual source is (a dvd rip? - we don't need to know the actual name of the movie/tv show just what source it is coming from) and what conversion program your using. You will also need to let us know what the destination is. Is it for a portable video player like an ipod or zune? Is it for your computer or a portable dvd player?

the AVI is a dvd rip, i'm using total video converter and i need it for my Ipod.
    And it only supports 320x240

  4. 320x240 is 4:3 if you use square pixels (1:1). If you want to make it look "normal" widescreen it will be tiny thin with black borders. Almost impossible to view on such a small screen

  6. I suggest you don't use IPOD to view widescreen content. Seriously.

The 1st is from the IronMan apple trailer at 640x272. The DAR is 2.35

The 2nd is redone as if it were for and IPOD. Absolutely rediculous watching it.

I don't use total video converter, so I don't know if it has the settings. You can do this in avidemux. There is an IPOD setting (auto=>ipod). There are other converters as well like videora

    Good luck

  8. None taken! If it's ok for your tastes , then fine.

Like I said, I don't use total video converter.

    In avidemux:

    1) open your video
    2) auto=>ipod (this has presets for compatibility)
    3) press save including extension (e.g. "myfile.mp4")

    Cheers

Doesn't the iPod have some support for 640x480 - or somewhere around there - video? (I couldn't say... my sister's the one with a video-playing iPod. I just have a regular old music-playing iPod. )

Yeah, I don't know about Total Video Converter, either... for iPod video, I usually recommend Videora iPod Converter. I think Xvid4PSP may also do a decent job, though I haven't tried it.

FWIW, I use Videora and Xvid4PSP, always keep the videos widescreen, encode them at 640 x 480, and find them completely watchable either on the built in screen, but especially if connected to an external screen. I will not compromise my widescreen viewing just because the screen is small.

The second picture posted earlier is exactly what I get for my Zune when I convert a widescreen to 320x240. It's a little tight on the zune screen but like guns1inger said above I don't like cropped video even on a small screen.

Unfortunately my zune software reencodes anything that isn't spec for the zune. The same may be the case for the ipod, I don't know since I don't have one. But if it only takes 320x240 there is no sense in encoding to a higher resolution only to have it downconvert it and introduce more quality loss. Going straight to 320x240 is the better option.

Now isn't 320x170 widescreen on a portable player? I'm not sure but maybe somebody else can confirm this.

This topic cought my eye while browsing around, so naturally it struk my curiosity..

(I thought the ipod max screen resolution was 320x240 pixels)

poisondeathray, I don't own an ipod (I don't see the reason why all the hype about it, though maybe I'm issing something there, I don't know -- anyways) and maybe you know the answer to this, or not, but I was just wondering.. they don't padd cropped video (ie, 320x180) to a letterbox with their own pure black (would be better quality imo) or they won't work cause video is not in minimum pixel specs ? or something else error'wise

    Or, maybe put this way..

A -- ie, given 320x180 video, ipods auto pads it to fill whole 320x240 viewing screen
B -- ie, given 320x180 video, ipods bails out in an error or worse, plays video poorly
    C -- get a bigger ipod

    EDIT: sat 4:20pm
    source: http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/specs.html

    Display:
2.5-inch (diagonal) color LCD with LED backlight
320-by-240-pixel resolution at 163 pixels per inch <-- whatever that means

yeah well your looking at it on your pc, your ipod screens 320-240 is physically smaller

open that picture in a picture editor, set your ipod in front of your pc display

now shrink the window of the photo program until that picture will fit on your ipod.. now imagine watching a the whole movie

if your read for that , go ahead and hone conversion skills
