  1. Hi All,

I have a Sony TRV-22e DV camcorder, and I cannot capture video to computer through my firewire card. It works fine with the USB cable.

I tried to capturing using Ulead, Image Mixer (provided with the camcorder), Movie maker, Adobe Premier, etc... But, everytime an error message says something like "device not connected", "device offline".

After the first time I tried to connect it to the PC, the LCD indicates "DV-in" (as per the sony help desk this indicator appears when the firewire is connected to the camera). However, now even when the firewire is not connected, the message does not go off.

I'm using 'Nisis' firewire card. Likely I had three nisis firewire cards and cables (of my friends), but none could do the work. I'm using Windows XP, but I also tried in a Windows 2000 machine. No luck. (the nisis card says its compatible with windows 2000 and 98)

The nisis cards don't come with a driver CD. But it is automatically installed by windows. When I look at the 'device manager' the firewire card is recognized as a 'network adopter', and not as a 'video device'. Could this be the problem? If so, how can I mannually install it.

    Please help!!!! ......Thanks in advance.....

Excuse me, but if you are capturing to the computer, shouldn't the LCD read "DV Out"?

In the device manager, the card should be shown as 'IEEE 1394 bus host controllers'. If it doesn't have a yellow check next to it, should be functioning. 1394 can also operate as a network adapter. If it only shows as a network adapter, seems like a problem. I would go to the cards website and see if they have a additional driver that could replace the windows driver. If that doesn't work, you might have to use a different 1394 card. Usually under XP, a Firewire card is a simple install. I plug a Firewire card into my laptop and it installs automatically in a few seconds. Then when a camera or Firewire video device is plugged in, it shows up in 'My Computer' as a 'AVC Compliant DV Tape recorder/player'.

  4. Hi,

Thanks for the advises. I was told by the Sony Helpdesck that "DV IN" is indicated in the LCD when a firewire is connected (for in or out). so, it can't be the problem.

In the device manager, the card should be shown as 'IEEE 1394 bus host controllers'.
In the device manager, under IEEE1394 bus host controllers, it is indicated as 'VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" and without any yellow check. But it doesnot mention the manufacrure's name (nisis) as they do in other cases. (under Modems, it says "Motorola SM56 Speaker Modem"). Does that mean my 1394 card is properly installed? AND no drivers are available in the manufacture's site; it says the drivers should be included in the windows"

    Any suggestions.....

It all sounds correct so far. Last thing to be eliminated in this round is the cable. Can you get another cable to test the connection with ?

  6. Done that already.... (changed cables).

Now I'm thinking of using it again in another computer with windows 2000.

Can somebody let me know how the firewire card is displayed in your computer in the Device Manager. Is it under Network adopters? In mine it is under Network adopters? And please mention your windows system.

    Thanks..

  8. Can you take your camcorder to a camera or electronics shop where they could hook it up and try to see if it transfers via firewire and their known good cables? I've heard of people finding problems that way and would help you know for sure if the camera's working right before you go nuts trying to solve a computer problem at home.

    Another idea; change PCI slots.

Both my XP machines show the cards listed under "IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers" and "Network adapters".
