Firstly, I have a Sony DCR-HC42E DV Camcorder with analogue pass through.

My intention is to convert the vhs tape into a dvd. I want to do some noise reduction and other colour adjustments etc...

I have a very fast computer, Pentium D 930 Dual Core 4ghz x2 (I have overclocked this), 1gb dual channel ddr2 ram, 300 gb sata II HD, so I'm pretty sure this should be an easy task.

I assume it's best to capture to raw avi first, do some adjustments, then finally convert to mpeg2 dvd format and author, then burn?

Can someone please recommend software that will allow me to do some noise reduction, etc, to make the vhs tape look better?

    Thank you for any help.

  2. Try these :

    1. Dub the VHS tape to your camcorder as miniDV.
    2. Connect the Cam to your PC with firewire cable.
    3. Use a program called windv to capture the entire tape to DV avi file/s.
    4. Re-encode the DV avi files to DVD mpeg2 files with TMPGenc.
    5. Use TMPGenc DVDauthor to compile and edit theDVD mpeg2 files.
    6. Burn DVD.
    7. Watch the mrs cry.

You can do as singsing suggested, but after you can look at virtualdub, and avisynth to clean up the noise while you capture, or after capturing, while the file is still dv-avi.

TMPGenc also has within it a pretty decent video noise filter that is worth checking out, though it usually increases the encode time significantly. I use it from time to time with my projects. Be careful with using digitial video filters, it's very easy to over do it and end up with "cartoonized" images (too much detail washed out) in your footage. Good luck!
