  1. I just bought an ATI Radeon 9200se. When I play an .avi with the proper .srt file, the playback is upsidedown, doubled and only on the top half of the player. With my previous video card this did not happen. When I get rid of the .srt (rename it to something else), playback resumes a normal appearance. I have VMR9 (renderless) enabled and DirectVobSub installed.

Try a different media player first. The freeware VLC Media Player is a good test as it uses it's own codecs and works well with subtitles. It sounds like a codec problem. If it plays OK there, MPC may be messed up or you have something wrong with your codecs. Try deleting MPC and then reinstall.

  3. Try right-clicking the video and then go Subs->Uncheck "Enabled". It's probably the double subs that are screwing you up.

You don't need dvobsub. MPC has a built in subtitle renderer.

  5. Double subs were enabled, so I unchecked "Enabled" with no change except the subs on the bottom of the screen (being properly displayed) went away. VLC player played it fine but the Subs weren't displayed. I uninstalled DirectVobSub and now the video is playing fine with subtitles. Normally the "Play > Subtitles" menu is grayed out, and now it isn't for some reason. And when I had DirectVobSub installed before (with my previous video card), I had no problems with playback. I am not understanding why things sometime work and sometimes don't. I do like VLC player, but could someone tell me how to enable subs in it?

Previously I guess VMR9 renderless wasn't being used so internal subtitles were disabled.
If you use dvobsub in other apps, you could reregister it and block it in MPC's external filter settings.

VLC should have the subtitle display set by default. If you go to 'Preferences>Input' you should see a check box for that, along with a box to set which subtitle stream to use if you have multiple streams. You can also adjust the subtitle delay in 'Hot Keys>Advanced'.

  9. In VLC under 'Preferences>Input', there are many options. I couldn't find any reference to default subtitles or to find subtitles streams. I also couldn't find 'Hot Keys>Advanced'.

    It's Preferences / Input / Other Codecs / Subtitles

    And Preferences / Interface / Hotkeys / Hotkey settings / ...

You also have to look under

    Preferences / Video / OSD/Subtitles
