This IDE to USB adapter will not work with a laptop IDE drive.

You will need something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817145752

    Ans it is at $13.

The one in my link supports both regular hd's and notebook hd's

    Support plug-n-play, USB Hot- Swap.
    Accommodate all existing storage devices such as 2.5” HDD, 3.5” HDD, CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
Do not plug in 2.5” HDD and 3.5” devices at the same time.

What you need is a laptop IDE converter. The units they are taling about are nice, but they are about $12-$15. THey are hotswapable and have USB connectivity. If you want to go a cheaper route, go on eBay and get yourself a converter for <$5. Here's a listing for one, but pick and choose what you want. I have a couple of laptop drives in some of my PC towers with these adapters. Just had the extra drives and didn't want them sitting around.
