  1. Right, im currently converting xvid, svcd etc to Dvd. Im using Mainconcept encoder to encode, then TMPGEnc DVD author to author & then nero to burn the Vob files

I dont have a problem with any of this. The encoded dvd files play back perfctly on my pc, the problem im getting is when playing the finished dvd disc on a dvd player (tried more than one).

Half way through the film it will start to stutter & stop on 9 out of 10 films I try to watch. I then have to rewind, go forward etc to try to get it to play smoothly. im generally using datawrite DVD-R discs

I'm thinking it must be the discs im using or a burning problem?
Does it pay to use expensive discs & does anyone else have this problem??

Any help & advice would be greatly appreciated as this is doing my head in!

datawrite discs are also not the best...they are "hit or miss" as far as quality goes.

  4. ok thanks, looks like it could be the discs. Ive used Bulkpaq before with similar problems from what I can remember. Does anyone recommend a good quality disc to buy?

Try another mpeg encoder , such as bbmpeg or even quenc .

There have been a number of these post's over time , and all have some connection related to mainconcept's encoder .

A pc will play anything , home dvd player's will not , they are very picky at what get's played .

    Dvd-r , burn at 4x , no more than 4.3gig is best practice for all player's .

The 4.3gig limit might be where this issue is also appearing ... very few player's find this acceptable .

For xvid , and svcd , vcd mpeg's ... consider using vdub to frameserve to bbmpeg (check guide's section) .
That take's care of the video and audio for most .

Svcd and vcd's are another thing ... check for guide's by baldrick , there is a guide for ripping the audio from vcd available .

Or vcdgear , rip mpeg from dat .
Visualsubsync to extract audio as wav file .

Getting them realigned and in sync can pose the biggest issue ... currently working on mp4 from nero ... yet another conversion method .

As for dvd media , consider verbatim ... they atleast dont out source to other compainies ... unlike tdk .

Which is unfortunate as it is what I alway's used ... bad people ... if they were a dog with rabies , it would have been shot by now ... or run over several time's .

  6. Thanks also. Going to go back to encoding with TMPGEnc plus. Slower than Main concept but i'll see if it makes a difference. Also going to try burning at 4X instead of 8X

I'll nominate a compatibility problem between your DVD Player, media and burner. I'd be interested to hear what happens when you try one of these DVDs in a friend's DVD Player. Then repeat the experiment using the same material, but different media, and see if that plays on your or a frind's dvd player also.
    If in doubt, Google it.
