  1. Anyone know of an audio editor that can dither to 2-bit ? With a proper noise shaping method and subsequent pre-process filtering I could make 4-bit audio sound really good. I wanna see how far I can get with 2-bit.

Have you tried audacity? It's freeware so it might not be that sophisticated. But it's freeware and worth having in your arsenal anyway.

  4. i'm affraid that only Matlab with additional analysis pack... with such low resolution audio lot of new problems around nonlinearities appear (noiseshape dither level is comparable to signal level). http://csweb.cs.wfu.edu/~burg/CCLI/Templates/matlab_index.php .

Nope - SoX is not designed for this kind of operation - in fact SoX struggle with bit depth lower than 6 bits...

Once again 2 (or 1) bit is special case (as dither and noiseshape level is comparable to signal level itself) and special techniques are required to deal with it.

I think that ability (and will) of learn is the most important part of our life! I mean this is most interesting part of being alive.

2 bit audio perhaps not very popular per se (however i can imagine that this can be beneficial for retro computing) but for example digital power amplifiers (like for example TacT Millenium and similar) exploit various low bit depth techniques (TacT for example SDM + low bit depth "NPWM").
