  2. Misunderstood question. Original reply deleted.

It might help if you posted what the errors you get actually are.

The DV input on U.S. DVD recorders require the source video to be DV 720x480 480i in format. If you are shooting HD video then the DVD recorder cannot accept this. I don't know if your camcorder has an s-video output but if it does then you may be able to transfer the video that way because s-video is standard definition.

Wow that's mind boggling Fro. I buy a poplular Sony camcorder and connot record the travel tapes to DVD for my friends? Dont see a S output either.
What about going then to the computer? I totally hate this as you don't have the quickness of just going camcorder to DVD. But would that be possible and what is the procedure for someone with Toast 8? thanks

Set the camcorder output to DV instead of HD. Before I got the necessary software, my PC (using firewire) won't display the video if HD. I downconverted it to SD and problem solved. Problem is I have to stretch the video to wide because image is 4:3

I found the answer on page 68 of the manual. You can set the camcorder to output HD video at DV resolution via the iLink by changing a setting.

Yeah Fro, I think I had done that, but still could not see the video come up on the TV. I'll test again, and report back...

The HC-3 can convert 1440x1080 HDV to 720x480 DV over IEEE-1394 on the fly. HDV is by definition 16:9 so the DV out will be wide mode DV.

Most DVD recorders that have an IEEE-1394 input will record that as 4:3 so it will look horizonally compressed like this and for most recorders will not include DVD wide flags.

A DVD player or 16:9 TV will have screen aspect ratio controls to stretch that out to 16:9 like this.

The DVD will need to be reauthored to add the wide flag (e.g. IFOEDIT ) so that DVD players can handle it as a normal wide DVD including letterbox modes for 4:3 display.

I hope you figured that out.

While you can always take the downconverting route and create regular DVD for your friends, if by chance you have access to a PC, you can use Capdvhs to capture in HD via firewire. Though I could make this software to work only in XP and Vista. File extension is .mpg

In Vista Premium, the Moviemaker can also capture in HD very easily. The resulting video file has a different extension (not .mpg) but plays in Windows Media Player and VLC(Videolan). In VLC, there are de-interlace options to play with to make it smoother.

While capturing, I open the Windows Explorer to watch the size of file. I make sure that it does not exceed 4.38GB to fit in a DVD(around 25 minutes of video). This is not a problem if you have Vista premium because you can trim the video to the proper size in the Movie Maker. Your friends should have a PC with the latest Media player or VLC to watch your video in HD.

HDVsplit can also do HD capture but it did not work for me. When I bought my camcorder, I was also at a lost. Some advice here and there helped me a lot. Thanks to everyone.

Edit: Just realized that the Movie Maker has no option to retain the original HD-Mpeg2 format if you want to trim the clip. My bad.

What model is your TV? Most EDTV and HDTV sets have aspect ratio controls. These are usually on the remote.
