What are the drives in the recorders ?

I was wondering what are the drives in those ilo, pansonic, jvc, pioneer, magavox recorders ? Are they DVD+RW driver or DVD+/_RW drives specifically make for the recorders ?

Or some of them are off the shelf drives, that someday we can monster another drive we have into there ?

Note : I looked at these burners and noticed many of them have the same tray size enevelop as regular PC optical drive.

the drives are not interchangeable with PC drives. PC drives have the boards contained inside a typical 5 x 6 inch square while the standalones have the boards configured in many different ways throughout the entire box. some of the parts are interchangeable though. As to what the drives are it depends on the model. Some are +r drives. Some are +/- r drives. Most if not all burn both r/rw discs.

Does the electronics uses PATA interface for the optical drive in these recorders at all ?

ILO and Lite-On recorders use PC compatible Lite-On drives. So do some Cyberhome and Phillips recorders.

Wrong.

They are nothing more than DVD burners. In fact, a DVD recorder is nothing more than a specialist mini-computer with one task. The recorder burner does not have the same pretty case like a computer burner. Open the case and see what is inside. LiteOn uses LiteOn burners, for example. JVC often uses LG burners.

The few I've seen are standard drives. But there may be circumstances that make them impractical to pull out & use elsewhere. My ILO machine's Lite-On drive didn't have a standard shell; it had a big hunkin' plastic "case", so I couldn't mount it in a PC. It also wouldn't burn CDRs - probably a custom firmware, but no burner i've ever seen had that limitation.

I don't know if the reverse is true; the set top machine may sniff a "nonstandard" firmware and refuse to run.

It's a standard drive with a custom plastic plate. You can move that plastic to a standard drive and replace your drive.
