Compatibility with players may be influenced by media quality, quality of writer burning and media type. I have an older Toshiba player that is compatible with -R only and will not play +R discs. Check your player compatibility for different media, and be sure to use quality media such as Verbatim or TaiyoYuden.

IIRC, PlayStation 2 is notorious about not playing anything except "pressed" disks.

Retail DVDs, and not the kind you burn at home. There's no way in the world for you to make DVDRs that will play in all DVD players.

Commercially made - i.e. a DVD movie you buy at the store. They are pressed, not burnt.

use dvd-r ... the ps2 doesn't like +r ... also use quality -r disks ... taiyo yuden are best but ritek work well too (although the quality of riteks has fallen recently) ... most cheap media will not play at all in the ps2 ..stay clear of princo, bulkcrap (oops sorry thats bulkpaq) and non branded discs

You wont get dvdr that will play on ALL players. Best you can do is find media that plays on MOST players. Some of the first generation dvd players were not even capable of playing recordable media. I recommend TY as well.

  10. For a ps2 use -r media, write at 2x.

Btw, you didn't say what model number your ps2 is but that should be fine for everyone. You may also need to run your laser diag on your ps2 to align laser.

  11. I believe the newer PS2 models are more compatible with different kinds of media. Mine will read DVD-R without much issue, but not RW. Won't read +R/RW at all. I read that the newer PS2 units have different 'updated' drives that should read +/-R and +/-RW, but I haven't verified this personally.

Remember that a PS2 is not a 'real' DVD player, it just happens to support that feature, so compatibility is likely to be flaky compared to a standard set-top DVD player.

As a previous poster said, though, there's no way you can burn a DVD that will play on ALL DVD players and PS2s. There are just too many variables.

PSTwo (slim) is very relaxed with what it plays. Haven't done a backup that wont play on the PSTwo. Then, I only use -R, but yet again, any manufacture that's available cheap at the moment.

You're right about the model number. The earliest versions will not play burned discs to save it's soul but will play most DVDs. I have hit some of the bargain bin cheap discs (1 dollar Wal-Mart specials) that also won't play but other than that the player isn't bad and has it's advantages over the newer PSTwo. You might check for the model and drive capabilities at one of the many PS2 upgraders sites. They will usually tell you what can be played in them and what can't...
