I have tried openeing them with Photoshop, microsoft image 06 windows picture viewer and a couple more but no luck cant even copy them back off the disk as it says they are corrupt any ideas as to how i might be able to save the pics

The post say's dat , this is normal for vcd's , use vcdgear to pull mpeg from dat .
Use virtualdub to grab snap's of picture's .

As for recovery of file's nolonger on pc , you could use disk investigator www.theabsolute.net/sware/ .
Simple recover , but only use it to recover file's recently deleted .

Do not perform this if system defrag has occured as you could cause program's to cease funtioning , or system to fail at startup .

It's simple , just remember the rule ... dont do it after system defrag .

Also , even if you see a file , that you wish to recover , that was deleted month's ago , avoid doing this , or you could compromize the system , and be stuck at the bootup screen ...

If file name is in jibberish , this is xp's encryption system engaged , do not try recovery of these ... the recovery of these is preformed on another pc using windows 98 ... but the xp system must be using fat32 partition's , not ntfs as win98 cannot read or see them .

The reason win98 pc is used , is to prevent xp activation of encrption system , as it is not the active os ... this allow's for the true file name and identity to be verified for recovery purpose's .

Then return hd back to other pc after .

There is also linux bootable rescue cd's capable of recovering file's from ntfs system's , but again be carefull , only recover recent deleted file's .

When finished with bootable linux cd , eject disc , restart pc as normal , look at c:\ , partition on pc , check for image file of linux os disc , they do leave a backup of themselve's on the system ... used to save configuration starup of bootable linux's ... make's next time it boot's without asking you all those question's again .. about video , screen res , modem's , ect ...
