I'm re-authoring a commercial DVD in a more watchable format for me. I've re-encoded the video and just re-using the existing audio and subtitle tracks. I used DVD Decrypter to demux the video, audio & subtitle data out. I re-encoded the m2v file and now I have the old ac3 and a sub file to go with them.

The problem I have is that DVD-lab PRO won't let me use the sub file as a subtitle asset in the re-authoring. Why can't I use a sub file in DVD-lab PRO when that's exactly what I pulled off the original retail DVD? How do I get these subtitles unaltered in anyway back onto my newly reauthored DVD-R?

.sub is an acceptable format for DVD Lab Pro. How are you trying to load the subs, and what, if any, error messages do you get ?

not image .sub/idx ripped from dvds. i think you need to ocr it to text subs. but check the dvd-lab forums first.

First of all .sub filetypes are not even acknowledged by DVD-lab PRO as being a known type of subtitle file, but if I force it by selecting from 'All files' then it doesn't report any errors as such but it doesn't add it into the assets window either so you can't use it. There is no way I can find that will add the sub file into the assets window.

How do I tell if I have a sub/idx type subtitle file? The subtitle file I have certainly isn't plain text in format. Viewed in a text editor I just have alot of machine code hash and the file is way bigger than what I'd normally expect of a subtitle file at 4.2MB.

Yep, you want to use SubRip to get the subtitles off the original dvd and then save it as a .srt file then import it into DVD-lab PRO, then generate subtitle stream in DVD-lab PRO & it will save them in the correct format for authoring.

Thanks for that. I've done the SubRip bit following a guide in here and that worked just fine so now I have an srt file. Problem is though that I still can't import an srt file into DVD-lab PRO. Same problem as with the sub file. It just doesn't recognise it and won't allow me to do anything with it.

How are you importing it ??
You can't add it like you do the audio & video.
You have to open it under the main video by clicking where it say's "Sub 1"

Then Import it and then you have to generate the subtitle stream.

Hmm, I see but when I try it clicking the Import button works but gives me nothing. Nothing gets imported from the srt file I select, so then consequently Generate Subtitle Stream does nothing either.

There is somethig wrong with the file. Don't know what, but it certainly doesn't want to load. Even if I cut down the file to just the first 140 titles it won't load. Curious thing - I located another version of srt subs for the same movie, and while the timing isn't identical, the text is damned close, and this version loads.

So I don't know what's wrong with yours, but I suspect the srt file, not DLP in this instance.

    Here,
try this one in your DLP.

    newdocument.srt.zip

I tried it and it worked.
It's your's, i don't know why but when i copied & pasted all the text to a new .txt file and renamed it an .srt it loaded fine in DLP
The original one would not work for me either.
