  1. Does anybody know where I could find a H.264 codec? I would like to have one so that I can view MP4 files in Windows Media Player instead of QuickTime...

FFDShow will play H.264 if you enable it.

Sounds like you just want a decoder. CoreAVC is a fair bit faster than ffdshow/libavcodec so you might want to check it out.

CoreAVC is around if you look. Think it was removed from corecodec servers a while back, but plenty of people mirrored it.

ffdshow should work fine, just uses more CPU. For mp4 playback though you also need a compatible splitter like Gabest's or Haali's.

  6. Why was it removed from the website?

I guess because it was an alpha public test version and the release version will not be free.

CoreAVC rules. Very simple to find. Just Google it.

  10. Edited: Sorry I couldn't get the right name!

I vote for 3ivx (www.3ivx.com). This DirectShow filter supports the whole MP4 package - everything from the splitter, the AAC audio and also MP4 video such as DivX, XviD, and Nero Digital. It's very good quality.

It doesn't support the whole mp4 package. Doesn't support AVC for a start which is what this post is about. When they finally get around to releasing a new version, I am sure it will have AVC, ttext subs, chapters, etc. support, but till then...

If you want free, then I guess ffdshow. CoreAVC works fine though despite its alpha status. Quality for all spec compliant decoders is always the same, so it isn't like you pay for the speed in terms of quality.

http://www.elecard.com/download/avc_clips.shtml has some oddball avc clips that the Haali splitter seem to choke on for some odd reason ...
