  1. I recently made a completely standard NTSC DVD in TDA and after successfully burning I tried it in my Apex AD-1100W and it reads it and recognizes it as a DVD. Then, however, it won't play it it just opens the file explorer and has an error. I tried it later in my Polariod portable DVD player and it works fine. Any ideas on why this wouldn't work?

What did you burn it with? Could be that your Apex doesn't like what it was burned with. I had an old APEX 3-disc player that would only read dvd's burned woth EZCD...

  3. I burned a couple of the disks with the built-in DVD writing tool, the others just with a program I have for burning data dvds (drag the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders on and burn) that I have used before and it works fine with the Apex. I now have found that my Toshiba SD-V290 will also not play some of these burned disks.

It also could be your Apex doesn't like the brand of dvd-r you used. I've run across this same problem with a Pioneer player.

  5. Really, that could affect it? I just bought 100 DVD+R fujifilms

I'll burn a DVD+RW of this and try it

  6. I burned an identical copy of the dvd onto a DVD+RW of a different brand that I have and it works just fine on all players. I upgraded the firmware for the Apex, no change. Anyway is there something I can do to make these disks playable? What's wrong?

Are you using a Ricoh MP5240A with 1.19 firmware version? If not use this Flash utility to upgrade it.

Use the lastest version of TMPGEnc DVD author as its burning tool has been updated several times.

Also, make sure that you bit set your drive to DVD-ROM. I think you could use DVDINFOPro for this.

  8. I have the Ricoh MP5240A with firmware 1.11, I'm upgrading now Thanks!!

I think my TDA version is up-to-date, version 1.6.34.89

How can I check bit set in DVDINFOPro, I can't see the setting anywhere

  9. I did everything for the firmware update to the letter but it returns this error (before it starts I think):
Cannot update for different Type Code.

    *** NG ** NG ** NG ***

    Make sure Selected Source File.
I've tried several times and reextracted the ric file.

  10. It s probably cheaper to sling the drive than get rid of the media ... get an NEC burns everytime no problem.. sell your old drive to somebody junior at work (unethical ?? ) or give it to charity
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

  11. Well I'd rather stick with my drive if at all possible, I don't think that's necessarily the problem, its just not liking this media. What can I do to make the firmware update sucessful?

In DVDINFOPro there is in icon that looks like a CD and has +RW written in top of it.

Click on it. This should bring DVD+R/RW BookType BitSetting tool. With it set your DVD+R media to DVD-ROM.

It has been a while since I flashed a Ricoh burner. I do not recall the detailed steps.

  13. Ok well I went in there and it already says DVD-ROM:
    Current - ------
    DVD+RW - DVD-ROM
    DVD+R - DVD-ROM
I tried selecting DVD-ROM at the top but it didn't do anything, plus DVD+R is already set to DVD-ROM

You look to have a single format burner. Burns + media only. It really is time to upgrade your burner, then. You can order an NEC burner from newegg.com. Total cost including shipping should put you at about $50US or less.
It could be your Apex player doesn't like + format. You make no mention of it playing disks you've burned in the past. To make sure, buy a 3 or 5 pack of +R disks, MIJ, if at all possible.

I don't want to buy a new burner though, this one works fine with all other media I've tried and other disks (like memorex, sony, ect) all play fine in the apex. I'm just wondering what is different about the fujifilm that makes it not work and if I can correct the problem

As said before, some players just do not like some brand of media. No explanation of why. It just doesn't. Something to do with the dye that is used, or maybe reflective surface.
Just chalk it up as a lesson learned. Your Apex doesn't like Fuji brand disks. In that case, a new drive probably would not correct the situation.

  17. Yep, that sounds like that's about the sum of it. Thanks for your help, I talked to best buy and I can return them so I'll do that and steer clear of fuji in the future

The only difference I could really see between them is that the one that plays has no name - and I remember the DVD burning utility I used asking me about using nonstandard characters in the title - I didn't think it was important but could this be me whole problem?

Edit - I burned another DVD with no title - just blank - and it won't play

Ok, after running these above tests I reset the laser inside by moving it all the way back. After that some of the dvds I have burned work, here is the info for one of them:
