Best program to edit mpeg 1

Hi, I have a number of mpeg 1 video files of decent quality which I would like to edit without losing any of that quality.

At present I can get fairly acceptable results using Ulead Videostudio 9, but this program does, I think, re-encode the files and thus diminish quality (or at least I think it does even if I save the edited files using the same video properties as in the original files. Correct me here if I am wrong).

So I am interested in one of the specialist mpeg edting programs such as Womble mpeg2vcr or TMPGEnc MPEG Editor. I know both of these products can edit mpeg 2 videos without re-encoding and thus without losing quality, but can both or either do the same for mpeg 1 files? And if both can, which is the better program out of the two, or is there another program out there such as VideoReDo which is as good or better.

TMPGEnc is an excellent mpg1 editing encoder. I have used Cuttermaran for mpg1 with excellent results as well (although it has to be demuxed first). But I have also used VS6 using smart render and it doesn't reencode except where cut points require it.

VirtualDub can handle MPEG1, however you have to reencode to AVI I think.

Hey, Gagetguy,you say VS6 doesn't reencode except for the cut points. What exactly do you mean by that? I use the multi-trim function on VS9 which means there are plenty of edit points in each edited file.

Do the other programs like, Cuttermaran, Womble, and TMPG, do the same thing? If so, what do you think would be the advantages of the other applications for editing mpeg 1? I can't see any, but I'm a relative newbie.

Be aware that Cuttermaran needs .NET framework - while it's free, it's pretty big (I believe) to download. OK if you've got it already. It also needs demuxed sources.

Mpg2Cut2 sounds like a better option as it doesn't need .NET, and doesn't need demuxed inputs.

Have a read of those, and more, and see what suits...
