Just turned on my stero to watch a dvd, and my subwoofer is making a humming noise (rather loud, can even hear it over the movie). This is the first time it's ever done this anyone know why or how to go about fixing this?

checked the connections, and the humming starts when I turn on sub and stereo. Doesn't need the dvd player on to hear the humming. All other components are off, just the stereo is on and the humming his happening

is this when you have the DVD player selected as input or is it on everything such as your CD player/radio etc?

if it's just your DVD player have you checked the audio settings?
are any of the wires near any power cables?
what else do you have plugged into the mains?
have you tried just having the hi-fi plugged in and powered on?

If I turn the stereo from video1 to fm, the humming is almost louder then the music itself

try unplugging everything apart from the hifi and make sure no power cables are anywhere near the speaker wires

does the hi-fi not have any audio options, have you tried switching them?
has anyone been fiddling with connections at the back of the hi-fi?
have you moved it or anything near it recently?

What do you mean by options?

    No one else lives here

    Setup hasn't been moved

surround sound options, do you just have one audio setting that uses the sub? I've got a few on my hi-fi

did you try unplugging all electrical items and checking you have no live power cables running near the speaker wires?

Well I figured out the problem, it's my incoming cable line? If I unplug the cable from the wall the humming stops. Lastnight we had a large lightning strom I wonder if it did something to the cable lines? So now that I figured out the problem how woudl I go about fixing this? I guess I'll give the cable company a call....[/

I'm pleased you at least now know the problem . Unplugging everything but the essentials usually helps and you can then add them back one by one checking nothing affects it

could well be that the storm created a spike or something and has damaged something somewhere

see what your cable company says if nobody else can offer some advice , I'm not sure they will be a great help but who knows

look at all these results for unplugging your sub during a storm but that's not to say it's your sub as it could be your cable line that's damaged
