Okay. one of my wife's girlfriends just call me at work because she has a "major" problem. She figures because I'm really good with computers, I can help her with this problem.

I don't own a PS2. And the amount of time I've ever played on a PS2 in my life could be calculated to maybe less than a total day.

Anyway, here's the problem. She puts a disc in the PS2 and a setting screen pops up, but she can't play a game or watch a DVD on it. She can change the video settings and sound settings in some sort of menu though.

Anyone have a clue as to what she's talking about or how to get it working?

    I don't have a PS2, but try powering off & unplugging for a bit.

Apparently it has been powered off. It had been sitting unplugged for about 2 months. Don't they have some sort of battery? I'm not really into opening one of those things up. I'd rather leave it to a real repair person if that's they way its gonna be.

Sounds like the laser is either dirty or worn

    You can
    1. Use a dvd lens cleaner
    2. clean the laser with alcohol and a q-tip
    3. Adjust the laser height with the white screw
    4. Get a new laser

I do know she's tried to clean it. But I don't think she has any thought as to trying to adjust anything. Remember, she called me at work for this. As for getting a new laser, I don't know anything about PS2s physical workings, so I'd probably just refer her to an actual repair person. If adjusting the laser is simple I could probably do that for her, but if it involves opening the case up, not going to even try.

If it were an Xbox, I might be able to help a little more. I don't have an Xbox either, but it's closer to working with a PC and I've been around friends working on them. I also have more play time on them. In my life I have probably played an equal of about 2 weeks of straight play time on an Xbox.
