Hi, thanks to your help, I have managed to author a dvd using tmpg enc and various other tools.

when I burnt the dvd I was having trouble playing it back and was advised prob due to cheap media.

So burnt it onto some decent media and it plays fine on my computer. But when I put it in the dvd player in our lounge (Thompson Hd /dvd) it plays ok then gets stuck part way through. The clock stops and the picture just freezes.

Any ideas what on earth is going on please?

Advise as to what media format is causing the issue ?

Dvd-r should be fine ... if issue still , try cleaning the home player with a high quality len's cleaner ...

A large number of home dvd player's have issue's with + and rw media .

Try disc's in a friend's player and see if the same thing happen's .

Cheap player's use poor quality len's made from inferior material's .

    Try a quality len's cleaning kit .

You also say it get's stuck at ? point ...

Is this toward's the end of the playback ... if so , you may be breaking one of the rule's ... being , never write more than 4.3 gigabyte's as a dvd compilation .

Numerous player's have issue's reading past this point , some stutter , other's lockup ... they have issue with reading past the 4.3 gig mark .

Would suggest it's still the media and/or a problem with your burner or software. The reason it will play fine in you computer is computer DVD drives are more robust and more forgiving when they try to read discs... plain and simple they are just better.

Could be your new media is in fact junk too... just because it's a "brand name" doesn't make it good. Have you looked to the left to see what the user reviews were under DVD Media? Take a look under DVD Recorders too, see if your recorder is listed and what type of discs (+R & -R) others have sucessfully used...

Could just be that you hit the lottery and your first try with the new media was the 1 in a 1000 disc... Other things to try are burning at a slower rate are making sure you have the latest updates for your software and the latest firmware update for your drive.

They were Taiyo Yuden discs out of a selection pack I ordered from SVP. They are DVD+R didnt realise there was a problem with them compared to -R ones?

Have not recorded over 4.3 gig, it plays fine on a cheap (£30 dvd player) in our bedroom and also seems to play fine on my Xbox 360.

Perhaps I will try cleaning the lens then. Why is nothing in life ever simple?!

Well it's not necessarily a problem with -r vs +r. One may be more compatible with more DVD players, I don't know. Some players will play -r only, others +r only, some neither, some both..... Depends on the player. Look your player up to the left under DVD players, it will probably be listed and you can get a idea of what is compatible.

Probably the best suggestion was Bjs's to try it on another DVD player or even a few of them and see what kind of results you get. If you have the same problem on Multiple DVD players you have at least eliminated the DVD player as the problem.

Edit: Just saw this, I need to read more closely...

It's probably just your player, oddly most people experience problems with the more expensive ones than the cheap ones.
