  1. Attempting to convert some short (<5sec) .mov clips to .avi using QuickTime Pro but get massive inflation of file size (X5-10).

Any tips, tricks or alternative strategies appreciated?

You need to be work specific here. That mov file may be using a highly compressed codec, and that avi format you are going to may not offer you the same compression rate.

Quicktime Pro isn't exactly the best for .avi creation. I personally would load up ffmpegX and use a xvid compression, of course if a non "standard" codec is an option for you)

  3. Thanks for this. I'll give it a try.

Actually in my original post I forgot to include my supplementary... i.e. my reason for wanting to do the conversion was that a colleague wasn't able to insert the .movs into PowerPoint (PC version) — of course I could using the Mac version. Anything HE could do to insert the movs? Apart from buying a Mac that is (;-

The way I do it on the PC is to use TMPGEnc Plus. Here's how:

    1. Install the TMPGEnc MOV Plugin in the TMPGEnc Plus directory

    2. Open TMPGEnc and cancel the wizard mode. In the main window, browse for your MOV file and open it.

    3. Change the output type to AVI as opposed to the default MPEG. This should bring up the avi options where you can then select the kind of compression you wish to employ for both the audio and video. You'll need some basic knowledge of a video codec like DivX or whatever else you want to use.
