I'm using Premiere Pro 1.5 on an XP SP2 OS (not my PC from below).

I have a video file compressed with S-Mpeg4 v2 (thanks to GSpot information) that can be runned with windows media player, vplayer... but when I'm trying to import it into Premiere, it prompts me with "Unsupported compression in file" (all codecs were installed in a previous session). If I install once again ffdshow or other codec that include mpeg4v2 the file can be imported but after I restart the windows it appears offline in my Premiere project and trying to import it again will bring me the "Unsupported compression in file".

If you know how can I fix this problem please tell me what to do.

    Many thanks. Voicu.

    Sorry. I've made a mistake.

Even if I install ffdshow, WM9Codecs, 3ivx_d4_451_win (include mpeg4 v2) in the same session, it doesn't work. The only way is to install mpeg4fix.inf that comes with MPG4C32.DLL, but after I restart my PC, the old problem appears.

Guessing that the video decoder for that format might not be the default, or something on startup might be resetting the default (Nero has a check program that runs on windows start for example). Wmplayer properties with the file loaded might tell you, or maybe rename folders or files for competeing mp4 decoder (if there is one). But again just guessing based on prob after restart.

Thanks for you reply. I opened the file in premiere in the same session the .inf was installed and export it uncompressed. The bad part is that the file has 5 G now intead of 500 Mb but I can work anytime with it.

For the future might want to look at some of the mjpeg codecs avail. or HUFFYUV for export to intermediary file. Default windows uncompressed rgb often does some changes to the video hurting quality a bit, mostly color related I think. Don't think you'd want to worry about it now, but when you have time, finding & having the codec(s) available next time could be a help.
