  1. Really strange one and not as obvious as one may think.

I've downloaded a proper DVD movie with menu's (4.2GB) from a torrent site. It obviously has been downsized to fit a DVD5. It has only one audio english track on it - DTS. It plays fine on my Sony Surround sound amp - it displays "DTS 3/2". It even plays fine through my normal Panasonic TV speakers. BUT I have come across 2 people now who when they play the film do not hear any sound.
Initially you will all say....ah DTS is not decoded by the other 2 people's players, well this is where things get strange as these other players play retail DVD with DTS selected tracks without a problem.

    How strange is that ?

    Perfectly normal.

These are public domain DVD's, right?

    1. Very few dvd players decode DTS on their own. Most send a digital signal out to an amp to do this for them. Do your friends have DTS decoding amplifiers ?

    2. Very few, if any, commercial disks ship with only a DTS soundtrack as this is outside the dvd specification. Are you sure they playback the DTS soundtrack on these commercial disks ?

    3. As stated in the previous point, DTS only is outside the DVD specification. Perhaps your friend's players cannot playback disks that have DTS in audio track 1.

  4. guns1inger,
You make some valid points although I have been told they have played other DTS tracked DvD's, but I have asked them to play such DVD's again and switch to the various audio channels just to make sure they definteley can play DTS sound tracks.
The DVD I downloaded was a rip of a retail DVD with only the DTS audio track ripped. I must say I haven't heard of dvd players which specifically cannot handle DTS only tracks, but can handle DTS only in multi audio tracks.

Another thing that may or may not have any bearing on this is the audio track on this ripped DVD is a full rate (768kbps) audio track ? as opposed to half rate, which is the norm ? Is it possible for a dvd player to decode one kind of DTS track and not the other ?

I'll post feedback as soon as I get it.

No you don't. You are in breach of the forum rules and are being issued with a formal warning. No discussion of downloaded rips of commercial DVDs at Videohelp
