cant figure out burning a dvd

I have tried numerous times trying to burn a dvd and for the life of me I cant get it. My standalone is Samsung DVD-P242 dvd player, I have Nero 6 ultra edition and im trying to burn a .avi file into a dvd to watch on my standalone. Please LMK if you know how I can do this successfully

If you have Nero Vision ... convert AVI ... to a DVD

I have Nero Vision Express 2 I was looking around on it but didnt find avi to dvd any idea where I do it in

Before doing anything else, learn how to search.
Click CONVERT left.
You'll see a select box labeled Format Conversion:. There, you'll find guides for most any video coversion imaginable.
Start reading. You'll find that AVI to DVD Video involves lots more than burning it to disc...

Or just try a program like the freeware version of DivxToDVD if you want simple. It will probably work better than Nero.
