Being not very computer savy, I looked through the site found one method below, is this the easiest
    https://www.videohelp.com/srtsubsvirtual.htm

    Problem
I use VirtualDub 1.6.11 to open video file avi. Error message "can't locate decompressor for format XVID(unkown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Window(VFR) compatible codec to decompress video. Direct show codec such as those used by Windows Media Player are not suitable.
    What to do?

    Thanks for all the help.

Thank you XVID codec installed and it is working.

Still looking for best simplest solution on subtitling. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks so much

Once it plays in VDub or VDubMod, add the subtitler or VSFilter plug-in and that should be pretty much it. Then just load the movie, load the sub, and render away. What else is there?

You if you put the srt and avi file in the same dir, and name them the same (except for the extension) could hope for DirectVobSub filter to pick it up - just open the AVI in TMPGEnc and encode to VCD specs mpg. But I really also would recommend filtering in VirtualDub and frameserve to the encoder.

*think* from past research & threads when this has come up, subs support on VCD &/or SVCD is a bit spotty, only a relative few players will display. [none of the players we have will do it, so all I can do is report a quick summary of what I've read]

There seems to be 2 systems that can be used that are in the specs, Phillips I think was the most popular, used to be just one app widely available that didn't work well, Winsubmux is supposed to work.

For VCD there's no switchable subs support at all - it has to be hard subbed.
For SVCD, there is support for selectable subs, but, like you say, not many players support that part of the SVCD standard.
