and Norton's Internet Security 2004
Last year ... when I did video capture I did it with the tools I have in my profile.
But as time has gone by ... I've bumped up to a faster system. And now we have HDTV PC tuner cards.
I plan on getting the MyHD MDP-130 ... HD TV Tuner Card

Okay ... here are my questions for you folks.
As I am messing around on the Net ... I go to a web page and I find I can't download something or see something.
I then disable Norton Internet Security ... and go back / refresh the page ... and then I can see what is missing.
About a minute later NIS is bugging me with this pop-up ... that I've got it turned off ... geez ... yes I know this.
So ... I'm thinking about making another computer ... using the AMD XP 3500 64 Bit ... CPU ..... I bought 3 of them last spring ... I will have one system left to build for myself.
Okay ... how to say this correctly ... How do I get around ... all this stupid reminders telling me I've got something disabled ... and still be able to get on the NET also ... and still maintain decent video capture.
I bought a outside UHF antenna and 20 feet of pole and I'm going to start checking out the OTA broadcasts of HDTV in my area ... and do some video capturing at same time. [Comcast Cable is lousy for providing a decent signal]
But I dont want to lose any frames while capturing ... something disabled and a stupid pop-up appears. I already looked in Norton and didn't see a check box that could help with this problem.
Suggestions include ...
anti-virus program that protects but doesn't bug me.
methods used to keep Win XP from bugging me .... Programs running in the background ... etc ... etc ...
Black Viper ... had some pretty good suggestions ... but his web page has disappeared. But I saved his web page to a folder and then I WinRared the folder ... just in case he did disappear some day.
So what's up ... how do you guys get decent video captures without your Security programs interfering or WIN XP bothering you.
Oh ... I wont be surfing the net as I'm video capturing but I don't want my resources being used for NIS or whatever why I'm video capturing.
I am thinking about installing Windows 2000 ... but I will miss not having System Restore.

1. remove anything that has norton in the name from your system (ghost though is a good program)
2. turn off auto indexing
3. shut down any process that you dont need
4. capture away"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I gave up on Norton for some of the reasons you mention. It's the 'Internet Security' part that was especially irritating.
I use a combination of freeware programs that work fine for me, AVG antivirus, SpyBot S&D and Spyware Blaster. Just keep them updated. I also use a hardware router and the Windows firewall.
And keep your Windows OS system updated. All these programs are pretty much transparent in operation. It does help to have a high speed connection as it's a bit of a bother to keep them updated over a slow dialup.
If ballon windows bother you, look into Tweak UI and you can disable them. It's part of PowerToys:

I don't have any capture problems on either of my systems, and I leave CA1 antivirus up, have teatimer up, plus a bunch of other network type tasks running, and have no capture problems at all. Worked fine when I had Mcafee suite as well. If it is a concern, just reboot into safe mode to capture.

Thanks guys for answering ... this should help other viewers ... too.
I especially want to know what other people are using.
Safe mode ... hmmm ??
.... Some devices will not appear if I go into Safe mode. -
Don't know about HD capture, but generally shouldn't need to do much of anything special or different other then normal tuning of your system.
HOw do you go online? IF you use a network, disable it in XP. Now can turn off anything you want, including services, but be careful as this can make stuff work slower, not faster. Reports are plentiful for dropping Norton & using anything else.
As a rule turn stuff off temporarilly to capture if it bothers you, let it start up as normal when not capturing. If that's a drag, creat limited user profiles and set one up for capture, without online access, or virus stuff, or anything beyond the essentials. -

is it norton, or is it windows? if it's the little shield type thing with the red X across it, thats actually windows...just click it open and tell it not to monitor your firewall/antivirus....i had to do this a while back because at that point, it didn't properly pick up on my firewall.....
