DV is DV. Quality is the same after stream transfer.

WinDV is simple and works well.
Scenalyzer http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html adds optical scene detection.
Programs like Premiere and Vegas allow automated batch transfer from a log sheet.

    Depends what features you need.

  4. Be warned, it looks to me that WinDv is spoiling my 16:9 DV content. It looks 4:3 using VLC player!!

Yes with WinDv. Hit capture again to pause. It will auto create a searate file name. You need to uncheck the box next to the capture button to inhibit camera preroll control. This is necessary if using a transcoder or a camcorder in pass-through mode.

The other programs can do this as well.

ScenalyzerLive is supposedly the best for DV AVI capture/transfer.

    Why do I say that?

Well you should have no A/V sync trouble with DV AVI capture/transfer yet some people do experience this ... for those few that do ... ScenalyzerLive is the one program that seems to work without A/V sync issues.

I used WinDV to transfer via Firewire (no axternal capturing device such as Dazzle etc used) to my HD.
When I view the quality on my PC using Ulead Video Studio 9.0 edditing tool i'm not satisfied with the quality, is this normal or do I have a lot of settings rong?

WinDV or other DV transfer programs don't really do anything to the DV file, they just help transfer it. DV is interlaced. If your viewing program cannot properly handle interlaced video, that may be the effect you are seeing.

Have you tried comparing transfer via Ulead Studio Capture vs. WinDV?

With VS9, make sure you are "capturing" over IEEE-1394 as DV, not "DVD" or MPeg to get full DV quality. The capture file should be 13.5 GB per hour.

Also, try to make a test DVD at 7000Kb/s or more bitrate. Then view the DVD and the DV camcorder original on a TV set to judge relative quality.
