Simple DV capture program

I'm working on a project of importing all of my 8mm/Hi8/D8 and HDV content into my computer. Is there a very simple and free program that will handle the basic DV transport method and input into a digital file, with the option as separate files for each clip, or 1 long file? I do not need any other capability but to control the camera to start/stop playback and import the file. The program would need to work with Win 7 x64.

Try searching "Tools" (left side of screen) -- there may be others you like. But, WinDV gets my vote.

I used Stoik Video Capture with excellent results in the past. I highly recommend it. Very small and a tiny footprint.

There's an excellent free software for capturing and processing DV files on the fly. It's called Enosoft. You can find it at: www.enosoft.com
It's a teriffic program.

It has many useful features, but the scene-splitting in the enosoft software isn't frame-accurate. IME it loses about 0.5 - 1 second of video at each scene change. WinDV rarely loses anything - sometimes I suspect it loses a single frame, but that could be the camcorder.

That's about right. For frame-accurate splitting, I recommend WinDV.

[FWIW, the reason I didn't make it frame-accurate (which would require more processing and more of my time) is because most scenes have a second or two of stuff you don't need and, once dropped on to an NLE timeline, will be trimmed off. The logger, though, is frame-accurate and creates EDLs.]
