I have an old Nvidia Riva TNT2 M64 32Mb on my computer. I'm not a gamer and the card always worked ok for videos in any format, watching DVDs, capturing with my Hauppauge, anything.
Suddenly I can't run videos anymore. It stutters in AVIs, SVCDs and DVDs are impossible to watch (heavy stuttering and chopped video), the video from my capture card is awful (while watching on computer, at least) and VCDs, even not stuttering, have a terrible image.
It started from nothing, I didn't install anything on my computer before this problem appeared.
I alredy formatted my HD and the problem is still there.
I see that the "AGP texture acceleration*" is not available on dxdiag, but I don't know if it was available before.
I have all necessary codecs, no hardware conflict and the latest DirectX installed.
I'm using the video drivers from Windows XP Professional installation and already tried the latest drivers available for my card on Nvidia's site.
    Any idea?

*My Windows is in portuguese, so I think that would be the option on english OS.

It's hard to be sure if it's just a problem with the card, but it seems you've done all the right things to set it up.

I think I would replace it with something newer. As you mentioned, if you are not a gamer, you don't need an expensive card.

A couple of cards to look at: ATI chipset 9550 and the Nvidia GeForce MX4000 or GeForce 6200 chipset cards. Many of these cards are made by different manufactures, but use ATI and Nvidia chipsets. The 9550 is about $60US, the MX4000 about $40US and the 6200 about $70US.

It may be that the BIOS or the chipset on the card is failing or is getting to be incompatible with some of the programs or the OS changes MS adds.

Just got a Radeon 9550 with a friend and the stuttering when playing DVD files seems to have decreased. AVI plays a little better.
The major problem now is display refresh.
To surf long sites using the scroll on the mouse it goes really slow.
The AGP aperture size on BIOS is set to 512 and the speed to 4x/8x.
When trying to load BeyondTV it says "Warning: nothing will be rendered. The reference rendering device was selected, but your computer only has a reduced-funcionality reference device installed. Install the DirectX SDK to get the full reference device."
Then I hit OK and it says "Switching to the software renderer. This implements the entire Directx3D feature set, but will increase processor useage dramatically. Please make sure you are not running in remote desktop mode. Also, please check that your video card drivers are correctly installed and that they both support DirectX9."

Well, when I installed this Radeon card I used the latest Catalyst drivers from ATi site.
Now I (don't ask me why) re-installed it using the drivers from Gigabyte's website. And now everything is OK.
No stuttering or chopped videos, no bad image, no refresh problems... everything normal.
But the AGP texture thing on dxdiag is still not avalable.
    Weird!

ATI drivers can be strange at times. I have the same card in my multimedia computer.

If you haven't done this, set the refresh rate up to 75Hz, or even 85Hz if your monitor can go that high. 60Hz (Or the default) is a little low for most monitors. The higher settings seems to give a clearer picture.

I can set the 'Texture Preference' in the ATI 3D properties page by using 'Custom settings', but I left it at default. I think it's more for gaming anyway. It's set at 'High Quality'.

My monitor is set to 75Hz, but the drivers from Gigabyte site did the trick.
I already returned the card to my friend. I'm just waiting to receive my GeForce FX5500.
