Question on converting DVD to AVI.

I'm using DVD to VCD AVI Divx Converter to convert a DVD to an AVI file. One of the options I need to choose is the video codec. Which do I choose?

Since it's a DivX converter, and your source is DVD (mpeg), then i would say Mpeg to DivX...

DivX is a codec..

On a side note, do you understand what .AVI, Mpeg, and codecs are??

And you are aware if you are converting to Divx or Xvid, then only thing that does the converting is the codec. In your case the Divx codec. The program you use to operate the codec doesn't mean much. There are quite a few programs that can use the same codec.

If you want to convert a DVD (After decrypting it) to Divx or Xvid, you might look into Fairuse Wizard. It's freeware. Works very well.

Others are VirtualDub, and AutoGK, and several more. Look in 'Tools' to the left for other programs. <<<<<<

Thanks for your replies. Yes I am a big time noob at this so sorry if these questions appear stupid Here goes another one...What I'm up to is to be able to play this DVD on my older notebook which does not have a DVD player. How can I copy the necessary files to my external hd so I can just play it from there?

I would look into Fairuse Wizard. It's easy to use. All you need to do is rip the DVD to your hard drive. DVDFab Decrypter does that well. Then use FUW to convert to about a 700MB Xvid video.

You can use a software player like VLC as you won't need to install any codecs, it has it's own. This is the method I use for playing from my laptop and it works well.

All the above programs are freeware. FUW can be upgraded for about $20US if you want more options. You can try these out and see if it's what you want.

I'm not sure what you mean about copying the files to your external HD. You can put the video on a CD if you want.

Thanks much. Worked great! I used FUW directly from the DVD and ended up with a 670 MB file that I burned to a cd!
