Anyone got suggestions for a cheap DSL modem? I got a friend moving out of town in 3 months and his DSL modem crapped out. He's a bit sketchy as to telling me how, but knowing him it involved a stupid stunt after drinking beer.

He wants a cheap one, because where he's moving to, he'll have cable and he already has a cable modem. He doesn't want to switch off DSL because he doesn't want to pay setup fees for cable broadband when he's only going to have it for 3 months.

He's price ranged out at $40-50 if someone's got any suggestions. Someone let him borrow a USB modem, but that thing was a POS. We couldn't figure out how to get it to work properly. And he couldn't connect a router to it either.

    HELP!

Rent it from the provider. Mine is $5 a month if I were still renting it.

Oddly, the provider doesn't have them as rentals. I questioned it too, but the ISP people just said that they stopped renting because the cost was not benefitting them. I'm not sure what that means other than they must not have been making a profit on it. I don't see why not.

Here's one which is a little more expensive then you listed but it has built in router and supports both ethernet and USB.

It works with verizon and AT&T ADSL connections. I don't have experience with any other dsl service providers.

Send your pal my way. I have about 3 or 4 from my yearly DSL provider switch. Every time my contract expired, I'd go with a new ISP and they'd give me a free modem. I'll find out what models I have and list them later.

Will do. I'll send a PM if he decides to go that route. The DSL provider out here is Sprint.

Sprint rapes your a** with a pool cue, 3 ways never before heard of.

EDIT: I also don't know what the deal with this is. I was looking at places on the cost it is to make the modems, both DSL & Cable. It costs more to make the cable modems than the DSL modems, but for some reason, the cable modems sell on average for about $35-$65. The DSL modems on average sell for $70-$100. WTF is up with that? I do see the demand for cable modems is higher, but why such a large difference in cost.

Above are brand new prices. Used DSL modems sell much cheaper than Than Used Cable modems. Old cable modems sell pretty cheap, but newer style modems don't sell too much less than the retail. IE: used motorola surfboard - Old style going for $5; new style going for $25+

Used DSL modems run between $10-$30 regardless, it looks like.

I think the worst thing about DSL is the fact that it works like DC power circuitry. The farther away from the source you are, the weaker the signal and performance.
